What does a couple wear to a black tie invited wedding at four in the afternoon in September. In California?

Black tie weddings usually take place later in the day. But since this one is earlier, I assume the same rules apply.
Men: black tuxedo
Women: Long dress, dressy shoes and jewelry. Avoid white, red and black or anything that would look like a prom dress. Keep it conservative.

I think a nice dress with strappy sandals. I stay away from white or black dresses at weddings myself. I went to 2 weddings in CA in the past year, and it seems anything goes, but I would over dress than under dress. I didn't wear slacks to either one. I wore a red halter at one, and I think I was fine, even the bride told me I looked good.

guys: tux. chicks: more complicaited. never wear white unless your the bride.maybe a nice lite shaded dress that goes alittle below the knee, with short wavy sleeve, and matching open toed shoes.

An elegant dress. Nothing too sexy either, you don't want to stand out more than the bride. Keep it conservative.
