If you want to be on your back on the ground with that larger opponent between your legs then brazillian Jiu-Jitsu but If you want the other guy on his back on the ground and you standing try boxing Boxing,Muay Thai.
BJJ is almost useless in a real situation. I've never been stepped to by just one person before, it just doesn't happen that way. It's always more than one person...and those other dudes and gonna wait for you fight them one on one.
When in doubt, knock 'em out.

That's easy!! Buy a gun or get a baseball bat!! hahaaha just kidding. Um.... Any martial art would work if by larger you mean 3~12 inches taller and wider/stronger (but this requires long & hard training). And if the guy is just HUGE with Anchor arms and you're half his size, then.... NOPE! You don't stand a chance. That's just reality... No matter how much one denies it, Hagrid can still squash Jet Li like a bug....(I RESPECT Jet Li though, he's my motivation in learning martial arts) Many people believe that nothing is impossible, YES it's true, a smaller dude probably can knock out a larger opponent if he's well trained. But, I wouldn't risk taking that 20% success rate... Ergo... If the guy you're talking about is just buffer and a bit larger than you, I would say train hard and KICK HIS BUTT!! But.... If he's twice your size, buy a gun or a golf club. Or... stay away from him or her(hopefully not). GOOD LUCK!!

do not take bjj you end up with a huge guy on top of you your deffinatly going to lose because you cant escape and your smaller then your opponent. id reccomend tang soo do karate iv been training in it for some time now and have learned a considerable amount of self deffense. however dont expect to learn how to kick someones a** karates not about that its about self protection meaning youll learn how to incapacitate your opponent and get away not beat the living s**t out of him/her
of course most will work as long as you train hard and have a good instructor

Brazillian Ju-Jitsu....watch some of the very first UFC's. Royce Gracie was defeating guys way bigger than he was with that type of martial art.

If you train hard, any martial art will help you to do this. I know small boxers who can kick most people's butts. Your average fellow in a bar fight is pretty weak.

Filipino Kali, Thai Krabi krabong, Japanese Iaido or Wushu saber or sword styles. When your opponent is bigger than you, a bladed weapon is the ultimate equalizer.
