The normal amount of sleep an adult should get is on average 7-8 hours, although this varies with the individual. For children, they need more sleep.
If sleep deprivation occurs only on one night, then it isn't usually too much of a problem, symptoms are mainly sleepiness and maybe irritability. If sleep deprivation is continued and prolonged symptoms such as hallucinations and even paranoia may occur.
Sleep deprivation affects individuals differently at physical as well as mental levels.
Studies have been carried out on sleep deprivation. An individual for example, did not sleep for several days and developed these wild hallucinations (as if he was dreaming whilst awake) and developed high paranoia. However, after this, he slept for 15 hours straight and was back to normal. But he had bad relationship problems (2 divorces) and his family and friends said that his personality had "changed".

If you get too little sleep, and everyone is different, you become more irritable (argumentative); continually getting less sleep can lead to mental confusion and loss of concentration. It also leads to an inability to get to sleep because of irritability, anxity, and hyperactivity.
