one time me and my friend were biking in the sidewalk (we were both wearing helmets) and then two other guys went past us and he said to us "safety first" in a mocking way. so, basically, will a helmet make you look more like a geek??

Maybe, but falling and busting your head open will make you look worse!

Does anyone on the Tour de France ride without a helmet? The odds of any of them falling off is probably slim, but it does happen, so better safe than sorry when it comes to safety. I'm sure when one of those baffoons that made that statement falls off a bike from being "hit" by something and cracks their head open and is sent to the hospital, they'll think "safety first."
I find that geeks tend to be safe, while "jocks" are usually all banged up.

I've noticed the recent trend to not wear a helmet is increasing. Over the past couple of years it's stretched from people not wearing a helmet, but have it slung over their bar ends (protecting one grip), to just not having a helmet with them at all.

For a while I would say to myself "Pfft, wear a helmet ya' moron" but then I realised, it's just Darwinism at work. Those that believe it's safe to ride around without a helmet will either not crash and survive, in which case it won't be too long before they take some other unnecessary risk and die, or they will crash and die. Either way - it's just a different form of natural selection, or or slight change to survival of the fittest - survival of the smartest.

Answer them:"Safe is Smart!" Just to add 2 short stories to the others: My teenaged son went to hospital after falling off his bike and splitting the skin on his forehead on concrete. He was okay but you should have seen the pool of blood. The next day, I went out and bought him a helmet. Some time later, he went trail riding and fell. The hefty guy behind him rode into his head!! But his helmet saved him. He got up a bit dazed and carried on riding.

For my family, it's helmet on or no riding.

yes wearing a helmet makes u look like a geek..... in skateparks everyone has to wear a helmet or u cant ride so everyone looks like a geek... the only time i wear a helmet is wen im at a skatepark but i dont care about wearing one anywhere else either if i have to bring a helmet somewhere on my bike ill wear it rather than carry it just dont worry about wat other people say cuz i say "safty first" to people that wear helmets to it doesnt mean they think any less of u
and if ur just riding ur bike and not doing any tricks or anything.... how the hell do u think ur gonna fall?

I was riding the Hotter'n Hell Hundred 2 years ago and in the 8th mile my friend went down in a crash and got ridden over by several cyclists. Someone actually rode over his head and left a chain ring mark across his helmet and he lived to tell about. Also about a year ago I saw a girl at the lake riding leisurely about 10-12 mph (without a helmet) and lost control, hit her head, and died. I've never ridden without a helmet since then.

Here's a simple way to put. If not for bike helmets, I would be dead now. Period. I had a serious crash, not racing, not doing tricks. Just riding along and there comes Mr. Driver out of his driveway without looking. My helmet took so much of the impact of the crash. It was smashed. If it were not on my head, that would have been it. It only takes one head injury to become a paraplegic.

I know three people who have been literally saved by wearing a helmet while bike riding. All 3 were hit by cars and lived to walk away and ride again.

Also, many places you should try riding in the street. I've seen 2 people hit by cars (slow speed) from drivers not seeing them when turning onto driveways.

It doesn't matter what other people think. A helmet is to protect your head. There was a lady in my area who ran a red light and was hit by a car. She wasn't wearing a helmet and she didn't make it.

Let me ask you a question. What looks geekier: A helmet or a smashed in skull? It think you get the picture.

Just tell them to watch the Tour de France; Aren't all of those riders wearing helmets?

I have to say they might think you look geeky. But do you really want to end up in the hostpial cuz you didn't wear a helmet. Belive me.....i've been in way to many biking accidents. and i regret not wearing my helmet...cuz i could have done really horriable damage.
