Back in 1973 I had been racing with Richard Hannon. Following his advice I backed a horse for the 2000 guineas every week. I backed it at 20-1 then it went out of the betting generally (he was at this time taking 200-1) came back in at 66-1 and on the day I backed it each way at 50-1. Led all the way and MON FILS won me £5,000- a lot of money in those days! That horse set him up to become the trainer he is today and the celebrations eventually led to his triplets being born!!!!!

The most I ever bet on a horse was a grand on Medaglia d'Oro during the 2003 Breeders Cup Classic. I had $100 to win, $250 to place and $650 to show. Pleasantly Perfect won the race by a length and a half but I collected on my place and show bets.
The most I ever won on a horse bet-$1996.70. I boxed three Meadowlands pacers on 5/17/2001 for a $6 trifecta bet. Quite a return!

In March 2004 I bet £10 each way at 33-1 on a 3yo chestnut colt I looked after as a foal to win the 2004 running of the 2,000 Guineas. His name was HAAFHD.
In April 2004 he won the Craven Stakes at Newmarket and his price was cut for the Guineas. On Guineas day he started at 11-4 and promptly beat one of the best Guineas fields for many years - he beat Snow Ridge, Azamour, Bachelor Duke, and One Cool Cat, among others.
I won just over £420.
I usually never bet more than £10 on any horse, but on this occasion I decided to indluge myself, Ijust wish I had put the money on before Christmas when he was available at 66-1!
He is now at stud and his first crop are yearlings. I'm looking forward to seeing how they sell at the sales later in the year and then watching his two year olds run next year.

I bet 4k to win 4k place and 2 k to show on a horse named Jaydunc (I believe it was 91)...owned by a friend of mine named Al morrison and trained by Lonnie Arterburn (who bred Lava Man), he was going for his 6th win in a row at Golden Gate Fields and he finished a non threatening third (grrrrrrrrrrrrrr)...the most i had ever won on a small single bet was just under 10k on a dollar superfecta race that my friend lou pena (a harness driver/trainer in the sacramento area) was driving the winner (at 27-1)...have had weeks where Ive taken down over 20k but im not a big bettor, never bet a lot on a horse to win after that beat...

I've never put money down on a horse but as a horse crazy kid, I'd follow the racing papers (too young to bet) and if I had actually bet any money I'd have been able to retire by the age of 19. My picks were rarely the actual horse, they were almost always the jockey. I followed the results for about 6 months in the papers, saw a sort of pattern developing. After looking at the results after this period of time I'd lay imaginary bets. Just a couple bucks here and there and when I'd "won" enough to "bet" more ... I had about $24K in my imaginary account. Not enough to retire with in this day and age, but back then ... cha! I was a very bored kid.

$60 -- $20 across the board on a horse called Fashionable Kim, running at Turfway Park. I owned half of the horse and it was her first race. She won, and I got around 300 on the bet and about 12k on the purse as my share.
