The purpose of religion is to give a structure of spirituality for the masses. The purpose for spirituality, on the other hand, is to know that there is not a such thing as the word "truth" and it's what you make of it.
For instance, the heavens gate, where people grabbed on to something to believe in, they made up their own truth as to what heaven was. If they only found non-secular ways to find spirituality, they wouldn't have all bound together and died in a massive orgy drinking vodka and sionide.

I believe that it was just a way to understand reality for the people of about 10 thousand years ago (not an approximate number). I believe that they used the term God just as a definition for life and the mystery's of reality. Remember the time frame I'm referring to is long before civilization. Eventually the people had to have a face to the universe they had to be able to identify with it so they would make statements that God made us in "his" image. They created story's with gods roaming the earth. Now its used as a reason for war, its the blanket of security that people cover themselves with to justify the actions we make as people. God is the reason for good, Satan is the reason for bad. Don't be afraid of death Paradise is waiting for you. Religion is here for people who need help finding "themselves". The human mind needs answers to their questions and religion provides those answers (although those answers sometimes seem ridiculous). Questions like "why are we here" or "What is my purpose in life." can never simply be answered as we just are here and their purpose to life is happiness how ever you can find it. There seems to always have to be a magical reason for everything and the story's religion provides help people find those answers.

Religion is there to confuse people. You do NOT need to be involved in a religion to know God. If you want a personal relationship with Jesus, then it is best NOT to become affliated with any "religion" Know ing God is simple and religion makes things so hard to understand!

the True purpose of religion is to separate the brain-washed/brain-dead religious believes from the Spiritually intelligent people;
separation is essential - it avoids wasted time, energy...
religion is Spiritual fraud;
Universal Truth eliminated religion from Spirituality a long time ago...
so much for religion !!!
Here's the simply Solution for religion:
Have UnConditional Love and Peace by accomplishing this:

I hear you out. The purpose of religion is to keep people from the truth. That's it no more to it.

nothing - there is purpose in a relationship with God, the church, a Christian's life, etc., but religion is just a man-made thing and terminology that really has no purpose.

"Religion is the opium of the people". Karl Marx.
Despite not agreeing with a lot of what he gibbered about, this one is dead on the bull's eye.
