I used to work in the Scottish criminal records office, and learned things like this are never simple!

It really depends on the police district, some keeps records off ALL accusations no matter how trivial. These will only show on an enhanced disclosure, as you were never convicted.
If this was over 20 years ago then there is a chance this might not still be kept, but it is a possiblity.
Officially, anyone who have been arrested, even if the arrest did not result in a criminal conviction cannot use the visa waiver programme. You can still go, but you need a visa.

I agree with others, you'll probably be okay, but I would strongly reccomend you check with the UK embassy first. The last thing you want is this to ruin your holiday, and it'll give you peace of mind

Here is the info from the foreign office website

To make an nonimmigrant visa appointment, please call the Visa Information Service Monday through Friday 08:00-18:30, excepting Irish Bank Holidays. (A live operator will schedule your appointment and provide visa information)

Callers from within the Republic of Ireland should dial 1580 47 VISA (1580 47 8472). Calls to this line are charged at Euro 2.40/minute including VAT, from landlines; some mobile and network providers may charge more. Callers from outside the Republic of Ireland and some mobile and network providers cannot access this number.

Hope this helps

In 1987 the fact that you were arrested and not charged (ie not sent to court / given a caution) would not have been uploaded on to the Police National Computer (PNC) but would have been stored in a collators office on paper, so you don't have to worry. When the requirements of the second Data Protection Act (the information has to eb up to dfate etc....) and Freedom of Information Act (your rights to know what was held ) came in almost all of these records were either scrapped or uploaded, but something like this would have almost certainly been binned as it would have not been linked to any Criminal Records Office (CRO) file because you say you have no convictions.

However if you wanted to reassure yourself completely you can go into any police station and fill out a data protection request form for which you are charged £10 and in due course you get written conformation about what is held on you (with some exceptions).

There will be no record of this incident (unless of course they released you to come back (bailed to return) and you never did!

Do not worry and have a nice holiday.

You have NO criminal record!

I assume you haven't been to the US before?

US immigration officials are unbelievably thick. Really....you'd have nothing to worry about if you were Lee Harvey Oswald. If you looked like a 14 year old girl who had smoked a joint however!...they would cause a scene like something out of 12 monkeys....but otherwise?...no.

Excuse me Shane...I am NOT her Uncle!

No problem. At the airport you get a green form to fill in. You are asked about arrests and convictions. Just write "no" to everything. Bobs your uncle.

all of these pple have good answers, and typically you'd probably be able to. You may still be able to, but keep in mind the recent terror bullshit especially since the two ppl that planned those two failed car bombs or whatever in london were found working in philadelphia pennsylvania.........
