I have to go with the guys who suggest .357. S&W and Ruger are the companies that you want to buy from in the end. A Ruger GP-100 or S&W 686 are two great choices. They are not cheap, but very versatile (handling anything from 148gr .38SPL wadcutter to 125gr. .357 Mag loads and all inbetween). Revolver ammo has gone up a lot (that damn brass!), but these types of medium-large .357 sixguns are the way to go for all-around usage.

Geeez After reading the other answers so far, you would think you were asking what to use to shoot tractor trailers on the highway. (kidding).....lol Anything above .357 magnum is total "overkill" and hardly fits the description of an "all-around gun." The .357 is powerful in and by itself but easy to shoot and very versatile. You can shoot full power.357 magnum rounds (factory), or pretty much any hot .357 mag hand load on the charts today. You can even hunt with it in many states. The only requirement is that the barrel be at least 6" long. Check your local DNR rules and regulations. The best part is you can also shoot .38 special rounds thru it too.......From factory hollow points to lead wad-cutter target rounds in many bullet weights and styles for inexpensive target shooting and practice. I would go the extra few dollars for a 6" barrel and buy one made of stainless steel. The Smith & Wesson 686 comes to mind, but Ruger also makes a fine product. Adjustable target sights, choice of several grip sizes and configurations, blued or stainless finish, versatle calibers, reasonably priced. I reccomend this gun to all of my first gun customers and I have yet to have any complaints in over 20 years of retail gun sales. Great gun for home defense. hunting or target shooting, plinking. These guns maintain their value too!

Smith & Wesson is your choice.

If you're looking for all around, try .357 Magnum or its smaller brother, .38 Special.

I wouldn't call this all around, but if you need more power; get a .44 Magnum.

Sure, I could come up with countless other cartridges, but the availability of these cartridges make them a better choice than say, S&W .500 or .454 Cassull...

Academy Sporting Goods has a stainless steel ROSSI .357 revolver for $329.00. This is a 6 shot revolver capable of shooting .38 and .357 shells. GUNS AND AMMO recently ran an article and gave it lots of praise. I'll post you a link.

Ruger Blackhawk in 41 magnum. It's an odd choice for anything in particular, but it's enough gun for hunting deer or hogs, or for defense, while not being overly large for small game, plinking or carrying around with you all day. There are very few 41 fans around, but they're a loyal bunch. Try it; you'll like it. Especially if you handload and can put together some light loads.

The best all around revolver is the S&W model 686. It holds 7 rounds, is very reliable, and can shoot .38 specials or .357 magnums. It is very accurate as well. I use one for home defense.

Sounds like you're looking for a .357 Magnum in your choice of gun makes: Smith & Wesson, Colt, Ruger, Taurus, etc.

Smith & Wesson makes a .44 magnum with a 4 inch barell that would be great for carrying in your vehicle, under your coat in cold weather, or in the woods while hiking. You can use lower-powered .44 special loads for self-defense to avois overpenetration, and if you run across a predator outdoors, the right magnum loads will handle almost anything here in the USA.
