I'm on a small farm with a couple of other small farms around me so I don't want to use my .270 and my 12 gauge doesn't have the range. The reason I'm hunting this coyote is because it killed my son's cat, 4 of my chickens, and chases the horses. So all you PETA people don't send the hate mail because my son could be next on the coyote's menu.

So if anyone out there with experience hunting coyotes I'll appreciate the info.

YES..They will work great to take care of your Coyote problem..Ignore any who say it won't because they are not only wrong, but sadly mistaken. Also ignore the answer that suggests you take a "belly" shot. This is not only bad information but just plain stupid. It doesn't matter if you use iron sights or a scope.Scope being the better of the two, and try for a head shot. The .17 rim-fire will take a Coyote and drop him in his tracks out to about 150 yards (Personal experience) with a bullet drop of about 2" at 200 yards (with factory ammo, Remington,Winchester etc). Use hollow points. I have baited them in close with a "Predator mouth call, available for about $10 at any on line sporting good and hunting supply store. I have also used the Johnny Stewart game calling cassette recorder to lure them in with an injured rabbit bleat. If you are going to sit in a blind and wait for them to come in..camouflage is an absolute necessity as the Coyotes eyesight and hearing are excellent. The .17 caliber is great on Prairie Dogs too! I have seen Coyotes come onto people's porches and eat dog food out of their dog bowls.they are incredibly brazen and determined! Good luck.I'd like to know how it all goes!

It's a good accurate rifle. If you got good ammunition, the only thing that makes the difference is your marksmanship. It doesn't matter if you use a .50 BMG but you're not able to hold the gun still. So go ahead, take the shot with your .17 HMR if you're sure that you can put the well placed shot into the coyote. My friend said that his uncle shot a deer in the head with a .17 HMR so it wouldn't ruin any meat. I'm pretty sure it's capable of taking out a coyote if you're accurate enough.

I have never shot a coyote with a 17 hmr. I have talked to guys who shoot them often and many love the hmr. It does very little damage to the hide and drops the dogs. I have to wonder if it isn't good for dogs what is it good for?

Why sure that .17 will do the job.I hunt coyotes here in new mexico with my marlin .17 i have killed dozens of them with one shot kills. And that shot gun is a good close range gun for coyotes.Heavy shot make rounds for the 12gauge called dead coyote. They work great!!If i was you i would call him in and wax him with the gauge!!!

you don't specify if you have a .17 HMR, or .17 Mach2. I would say within range and a good shot placement the HMR should work just fine, the Mach2 is, in my opinion, a bit on the weak side unless it is a very close range shot

If a .22 can drop a cow, then a .17 can certainly drop a coyote.

when you hunt a coyote, make sure you hit them in the belly....for some reason, they never seem to die behind the shoulderblade....unless of corse your using the .270, or something bigger...

i would not suggest the head, because with a hard skull and a bullet that small, you may not kill them, and that would probably **** off the peta people...

.17 caliber may work, probably not.......have you looked at Horndary's new SST 12 gauge sabot slugs? you are looking at 1482fps at 150 yards and 1463 ft lbs of energy and they are dead on at 150 yards 0 inch drop at 150yds. you will need a good scope for that distance........however the slugs don't come cheap......you hit the coyote with that and it will leave a big hole.....

There are a couple of .17 caliber rimfires and a couple of .17 caliber centerfires.
