A few possibilities strike me:
1) I get this too, and I know it's because I didn't take extra care to rinse out all of the shampoo or conditioner from my hair. If you don't get it all, it really dries out your scalp and itches something terrible. Yes, it also burns when I go through the rewash, but when I leave the conditioner in for a few minutes before rinsing very VERY thoroughly, the itching goes away after I dry my hair. If you are experiencing dandruff, then your problem is likely very similar to what I've described here.
2) Did you recently switch shampoos or conditioner? Sometimes your scalp freaks out when you do this, or you could be experiencing a moderate allergic reaction.
3) Is it possible you are exposed to any chemicals in your work place? Sometimes if you have exposure to acidic or basic chemicals, your skin could become irritated...though this explanation would seem implausible if you aren't experiencing similar symptoms elsewhere on your body.
4) Even less likely, you might have developed a condition called Eczema. I think that's how you spell it...but anyways, it's a dry spot that appears on the skin. Never heard of any cases on the scalp, but I'm not a doctor.
My recommendation is that unless you are able to treat it soon that you go talk to a dermatologist. Think about the shampoo, and try my method. I use Dove two-in-one shampoo and conditioner, and my hair is really healthy! It's not for everyone though, and you should talk to a professional for further advice.

Yes I understand I have been having hair problems MAJOR but I have thyroid problems. Well I think you should have your doctor look at it before anything else. I would tell you a few things to do but I better not until you go see the doctor anything you do NOW can harm it even more so better safe than sorry. What I did want to tell you is that I know you do a lot of the above things because of your job and to keep your hair up and away but it's not a good idea to have so much stuff on top of your head or to have your head tied up in a pony tail. Stuff like that causes hair damage, hair loss, even a type of alopecia. The humidity doesn't help either. I know my neighbors adopted kid or something had problems like that and with humidity ....and this is kinda disgusting he started to grow like mold on his head like green stuff it was yuckk disgusting....but I'm sure it was also the conditions he was living in and personal hygiene problems. I would see a doctor maybe its something simple that he can just give you a cream or a shampoo to use. I'm sure he'll say somthing about the hats and the humidity but it's hard with the job thing. Well good luck to you hope you find out whats wrong and get it worked out. :)

Could be several reasons: hair spray; sweaty head which only a shampoo will help; allergy to shampoo...for example. However, I suffered from severe attacks of itching on the back of my head and especially at hairline at the back of the neck. After many years of no relief from doctors' suggestions, my spinal surgeon did corrective cervical discecttomy with cadavar bone wedges and a titanium plate for collapsing vertebrae. For three weeks the itching was AWFUL!!!!...then relief! No more itching! I had a spinal problem which needed surgical intervention!

Seborrhoeic dermatitis
google this and read up on it. It says that is it caused by a bacteria or a yeast and it can be caused by a change in the enviorment....(the heat you have been in lately making you sweat.) Its symptoms include red inflamed scalp.

sounds like a simple fungal infection, you can clear it up very easily. Go to your local health food store or supplement store and get Pine Tar Shampoo. Use it to wash your hair until the bottle is used up, that will clear up your problem. You may also want to thoroughly clean the inside of your hard hat and wash your bandanas.

Have you switch laundry detergents or have you washed your bandanas or stored them and your hat with other rags, etc? (perhaps a chemical got on your bandana or hat?)
Hopefully a doc will come on with an answer.
