If it is an insured peril ..like Hail damage, get (2) estimates from contractors.

Submit the estimates to your insurance company.

They should pay you for the lowest estimate. What they will do ...if you fix it yourself is only pay you about 50% of the estimate and the balance (less the deductible) when evidence that that the roof is done is verified.

If you decide to (pocket ) the damage appraisel then you will only get a depreciated amount. Maybe 60% of the cost. since damage is based on replacement cost only. Read your policy.

you need to provide a great deal of information in order to prepare an estimate.

If you are in a developed country, go to your local building supply retailer and ask a lot of questions.

Oldest son and I reroofed my house in Phoenix a few years back. Materials alone cost me about $1.50 per square foot [$150 per roofing 'square'] -- they'll be higher now.

There were over 2100 square feet of roof. We did not do a complete tear-off job [permitted by local code] and it took the two or us about eight days in all [there were a few interruptions and we didn't work from noon to 4pm each day].

We did do a pretty darn good job.

AND, it isn't legal to do your own in every area, nor is it very safe on some roofs in some areas.

Ask a LOT of questions.

Well, the claims adjuster will figure out how much is related to your claim, and about what fair market value to fix it is . . . subtract your deductible, and write you a check.

And if you mess up fixing it yourself, then you'll have to pay someone out of pocket, because the insruance company won't cover that.
