pubic hair serves a purpose, it is the cooling system for that area, it wicks moisture away from the region thereby minimizing bacterial growth and decreasing the potiential for fungal growth as well. Trim it if you feel you must, but shaving it is not conducive to good health.

Pubic and axillary (armpit) hair act as scent traps. Being at limb/torso junctions, sweat collected is partly protected from evaporation.
In a primitive state, messages about mood, sexual arousal, family membership etc. were conveyed by scent as much as anything - pheromones and so on. They still are with some animals, including our cousins the great apes.
In the modern world people deodorise, and this function is lost. So shave if you want to - you don't want to go round like a dog sniffing your friends' backsides, now, do you?
