Wow, I just read what one person put as an answer a few above and I just want to explain. First of all, they were domesticated 500 years before the cat. Secondly, they don't smell if they are descented, regularly bathed, eating good, healthy, non-fishy food, and there litter boxes are cleaned. They do not take anyone special to raise, just someone who is willing to research and take good care of a pet. To the person who answered with taht awful answer, don't say stuff like that unless you have done your research. It's ignorant people like you that turn a lot of people off to one of the most intelligent and cutest animals.
It depends on if you have a lot of time on your hands or not. To get a ferret, you have to play with them/let them out of their cage at least 4 hours a day. They are very interactive pets and will provide you with hours of amusement. Beware though. They do their business in litter boxes, but you need at least one in every room they play in. Also, you have to be careful cos the critters get into everything, trash cans, cabinets, etc. It's always a good idea to constrict them to just a few rooms you know will be safe.
If you have less time on your hands or want a more cuddly pet, I'd say go with the hamster or gerbil. But I don't really know much about them. Whatever you do, do some research before you buy.

Hamsters and gerbils both make fine pets. It's a matter of preference. Do not get a ferret! Even descented, they stink, they need large cages, and they are banned in some cities because they are inherently vicious. After all, they are closely related to weasels, and are not really domesticated. They require a person who is skilled at keeping them, they aren't good for the average person to have. They are just not worth the hassle and the risk, and I can't describe the smell! Ewww!
But hamsters and gerbils are fairly inexpensive, usually gentle, especially if hand-raised, you can get everything you need for them at any local pet store, they are easy to keep, and loads of fun! If you've never had one, go to the library, a book store, or pet store and buy or borrow a book so you can learn everything about them before you get one. Then you can choose the one that best suits you, and know how to properly take care of it when you get it home.
Last time I was at Petsmart, they even had a litterbox for them now, that you put in a corner of the cage, how cool is that? I love the little rodents! Good luck, and have fun!

gerbils are great. They are dinural, so are awake night and day. They get very excited about any new thing you put into the tank for them and will immediately explore it. You can make cardboard buildings/tunnels for them and they will love crawling into, through, over, and on them. Then they will gnaw it all up. You can house two for a $25 10 gallon set up. They are by far the cleanest of all the small pets, so bedding is not a big expense. They live in clans and groom, nest, play together. You can house up to seven boys in one tank (five gallons of space per gerbil). They are easy to breed and both mother and father are great parents. Gerbils come in about 40 colors and varieties. They are not a big commitment as the life span is about 3 1/2 years. I have twenty something gerbils. One tank of four colorful boys is in the family room on top of the television. They are more interesting than the majority of shows, so I'll sit with the family and watch "Gerbils TV" instead. Cats also love gerbil TV.They are desert animals so they dont urinate as often and the cage can go up to 3 weeks without cleaning it.

Hamsters and gerbils are much cheaper and easier to care for than a ferret. They also take up much less space and smell less. So, I wouldn't suggest a ferret.
Between a hamster and gerbil, my preference is a gerbil. Hamsters are usually nippier and gerbils are more personable. If you do get a gerbil, get two they're very social animals. Hamsters can be kept alone though

A hamster! I love them I have 3 of them and they all are VERY cuddly! Ferrets have a really bad stink problem, even if you do have their stink glands surgically removed(which is a wee bit high on the budget side) and gerbils bite a lot (I used to have 2)! And in my opinion they are the cutest of the three!

Well, they all have good and bad qualities.
Hamsters are very loving and fun, especially the dwarfs. They are inexpensive to keep and clean because they only use the bathroom in one place. However, they are very seldom awake during the day, and can be very loud at night.
Gerbils are fun, they are not noctournal, and are very fun to play with. They can be very friendly if you play with them a lot. They do need to be kept in pairs or small groups, and I would suggest two or three males. They do need their cage cleaned out a lot more than most hamsters though.
Ferrets are a lot of money, time, and effort. They are bigger than gerbils or hamsters, and need a lot bigger cage. They are not always the nicest critters, but they can be fun.

Whatever I could afford to take care of and have time for. Hamsters and gerbils are much easier and usually don't need vet visits. Ferrets are more like cats. They need vaccines, more supplies and special ferret food. They need to have a lot more time spent with them every day, and need exercise. They live uup to 10 years.

honestly, a guinea pig. Hamsters are rather stupid (no sense of who the master is or any respect to him)
ex: I cared for one for 3 weeks and in the end it bit me
Gerbal: see hamster
Ferret: very smart and if not for size, most similar to a cat/dog. On the other hand they require as much attention and care so it's a larger time commitment.
Guinea Pig: Had one for 2 years. It loved me and required little care.
ex: When I would be holding him and he needed to go, he would run off of my lap, go, then climb back on. The only real care he needed was food + water+ clean cage (once a week was the usual although it's adviced to be cleaned every 2 days).
