In a goodwill gesture last week, Israel released Palestinian tax funds it had frozen a year ago when Hamas rose to power, a move that helped enable Abbas to pay Palestinian civil servants full salaries for the first time in 17 months.

Hamas, which has rejected Western demands to recognize Israel, renounce violence and accept existing Israeli-Palestinian interim peace accords took over the Gaza Strip last month after routing Fatah in factional fighting.

I'm not an expert or that well versed on the details of the issues, but I sure hope that there can be a peaceful resolution. It has been too long that people of all Nationalities and Faiths are dying over the issue.

Hopefully the Arabs, Israelis, and especially the Palestinians can live in peace, they might no really like each other, but hopefully the killing will stop. I'd love to see a Palestinian state with access to the sea so that they can have a reasonable opportunity for commerce. All sides will have to contribute and compromise to make a peace come about.

If the Egyptians and Israelis can reach an accord many years ago after the 6 day war and the Yom-Kippur war, then there is hope. They proved it could be done.

As much as I disliked and did not respect President Clinton, it was a shame that the accords he was bringing close to fruition did not come about. He was doing excellent work in that regard, and everybody would have been better off.

Maybe. As I've said before, signing any peace deal in this situation is a bad idea; the Palestinian government is not currently populary elected, rather it is appointed by Abbas. As such, we can't really be sure at this time whether most Palestinians support it or not. It is quite possible that Israel signs a deal with Abbas and withdraws (or whatever the deal is), and then Hamas wins the next election and refuses to accept the previously signed deal. Then Israel ends up with a hostile country on two sides - all for nothing. Until a new election is held and a moderate government is elected, I wouldn't sign anything. However, I would show support for Abbas to let the Palestinian people know that the way to peace is through moderation and not violent extremism.

Israel is not ready for real peace. Will Israel end its occupation for Hamas recognition of Israel.

Would be nice if you were, but I doubt it. I don't think fatah is any friend of Israel either, though they seem to be when compared with Hamas.

I sure hope so. Everytime I think the Israelis and the Palestinians are close to peace, something happens. I hope that they can have true peace there one day.
