No easy answer. Depends on what area you are going into as well. What I would consider key is learning, get some hands on practical experience, ie (if you want to work as an engineer on engines then get your hands dirty and work on one) and keep an open mind. Its not all about numbers and sometimes the statistical numbers are more important then the engineering ones.

I have a few tidbits of advice for you:
1) Work to live, don't live to work. Its important to keep life and work simple. Combining the two will do nothing but make you frustrated and grumpy when anything goes wrong with the other.
2) Always always always learn. Take every experience you can and run with it. When you're driving down the road, look at bridges. When you're working on a graph for a project think about the programming you could do to make it better. Constantly learn what you can learn, ask questions... lots of questions. Don't be shy. There is no reason you shouldn't learn about things, and most people like to teach.
3) Only engineer thigns you are interested in and passionate about.

When I started as an engineer at Hewlett Packard (28 years ago), they handed me a little book called "The Unwritten Laws of Engineering." It is still in print today and everthing in it is stil relevant (it was originally published in the 1940s).
I would recommend getting that book (it is small) and following its rules. I still do today (I am an engineering director today).
