I want to become a college professor, and to do that you need a PhD. I just graduated with my BA, which is in a field that a BA is useless in (you need a Master's or PhD to work in this field). I currently work in retail and I plan to continue working there for the next 2 years so I can save up money and pay for the rest of my education rather than go now and get student loans and be in debt.
Everyone I know including my family keeps making me feel bad and saying stuff like I'm an idiot for working at a minimum wage job and they keep saying things like Why are you working a job that high school drop outs and 15 year old idiots have when you have a college degree. I'm getting really annoyed but unfortunately, cause they've been saying this for a while now over and over again, I'm kinda starting to believe it. Any suggestions or ideas on what to do to shut them up?

There are alot of people with college degrees working in retail. Go to you local B&N and at least 80% of the staff has a college degree and a good many have advanced degrees.

That aside, I would encourage you to at least consider continuing your education on a part-time basis. You have a great goal, but don't be put off by the expense of the education. Do whatever it takes to get it. Those loans will get paid off and it's a great investment.

Well with your education you could get a higher paying job. There are a lot of them out there and mostly based on you having college. So its understandable that they want you to succeed. I would look for a better paying job that is not physical because if you get a higher paying job then you can go back to school sooner. Once you start back to school then you will understand why I say get a job that's not physical cause you sure don't want to be falling asleep in class. lol There are a lot of jobs posted at universities working in in the medical field too. Like working in a lab. With what you have taken in college maybe go to one of the counsels and ask them what type of work is available for what you already have learned and see if you can get a head start in your dream job. then I would talk to a professor and ask them if there is anyway you could help him. Don't stop there you can ask other college professors too. You can ask them also what they think would be a good job to apply for in your field now. Hope this helps.

I have an idea which might just be the thing for you, if you care to contact me through my 360 profile I will give you a web address where you will get an overview of a serious opportunity.
I have a colleague, who was a college Dean no less, but who found that his income was less than he required, in his new business he is now a multi millionaire, and this opportunity is out there for anybody who has a good work ethic and the determination to go and get it.

Regardless of what your family says about your current job, if your goal is to become a college professor, then why are you wasting time working in retail. You do not need a PhD to become a college professor-the fact that you would even say this leads me to believe you haven't done your due diligence on researching this career field.

I feel your pain...truly I do. I only have a BS, which as you pointed out, is pretty much useless. Sadly, I have 3 children which makes full-time on-campus enrollment impossible for me. I'm stuck in a dead-end job which I can't just quit because we need the health insurance. My solution was to enroll in an accredited university on-line to obtain my Master's. I have a semester under my belt, I am still working full-time and doing my coursework when the children are in bed. I currently have a 4.0. Look into that. You can follow your dreams and show them all!!! :-)

Good luck!

Be the best salesperson you can be and always look for ways to help your boss run the business more efficiently. That will teach you what you need to learn to move on to the next step . . . a better paying job. Stop worrying about stuff that's too far out to bother your neuron stream at this moment.

Hmm you sound so wise - don't let what other people say or tell you reflect about your future aspirations however don't rule out other jobs either - keep your eyes and ears open for something more in your field - or that suits you if you like your job and plan to hold your goals.. as I said listen to yourself.

You didn't tell us what field you got your BA in or what you want to teach. That would be useful. Can you find a job related to the field that you want to teach in?
