I was coming in to feed my two budgies and I was shocked to find one dead on the ground. Tom my other budgie was standing over him. I wondered why. They had a full supply of fresh water. They were both on a diet of Zupreem fruit pellets, They get to come out of the cage daily and love to look around for treats on the living room floor. I feel so sorry for Tom. He has had 2 BFF's including Junior. Both dead. I don't know if he can take all this change. How do you think Junior died? and will Tom be ok?

Well I didn't actually put them there. They kept getting out of the cage and looking for tidbits on the ground. I put them on top of the cage to play.

He couldn't have died from overheating since Los Angeles is still very cold at night.

Does anyone in your household smoke? That is the number one killer of pet birds! Also, candles, aerosol sprays, teflon cookware, anything that compromises the air quality even a little bit can kill a bird. You need to keep them off the floor, people track in all sorts of things on their shoes that are not good for birds. You need to keep them as far from the kitchen as possible, and away from any smokers. Maybe in a den or bedroom where you can close the door and run an air purifier. Make sure the room doesn't get too hot, and don't use any air fresheners, candles, or anything that can make dust and go into the air, like kitty litter, or carpet freshener, or cleaners.
Tom will grieve for his friend, just like people do. You should have him looked at by a bird vet to make sure he is healthy. Buy yourself a book on budgie care, and read it cover to cover. A good one will tell you everything you should, and should not, do to give your bird the best chance for a long, healthy life. Perhaps, in time, you may get Tom a new friend. I would buy from someone local who raises birds, not from a pet shop. You never know where those birds have been, or anything about them.
I would also keep the new bird in a cage beside Tom's, not thrust him into Tom's cage. Tom may resent an intruder in his space. This is also safer, in case the new bird is carrying an illness or disease. Condolences on your loss. Good luck!

Zupreem is excellent to feed them, but budgies are true seed eaters and 50% of the diet should be a good budgie seed mix. He may have been born with an undetermined health problem--birds won't let on that they are sick until they are VERY sick. Often by then it is too late. Sorry!

tom will go in mourning, just like people. keep em off the floor, because it has bacteria and toxic particles, did you use teftlon cookware? or spray air freshner or anything? take him to the vet to get an autopsy. you may be able to save tom's life.

the hot weather kills a lot of birds even when they are inside the house I would not feed them on the floor as birds are known to carry a lot of parasites
