I have a (+) and (-) on the convertor and know that the yellow wire goes to the (+), but what about the red and black wire?

easy dude 12v red and 12v yellow goes in the 12 v converter and offcourse black from the stereo goes to the ground of the coverter

You need to get a wiring harness and wire them it will not have to cut the orignal harness and they should have a a ground on them postive and the yellow is always going so you dont loss you setting and have a reset it all everytime you start the car. getting a wiring harness they are easy and better in the long run if you every plan on selling the car and still want to keep you cd player and you can put back in the orignal

get a fuse in-line connector and attach it to the red wire (just in case it is not the hot wire) and most times the black wire is the ground --- red to "+" and "-" to blk or clip the ground side of the 12v converter to the steel case of the radio -- use an antenna and attach the speakers -- enjoy ......

The negative wire could be grounded to the chassis of the radio. If you have a wiring diagram of the radio, then it would indicate which wire is used for ground. either way should work.
