Professional opinions vary. The increase in autism has been attributed to anything from an increase in toxins (such as pesticides) in our air, water, and food, to an increase in the age at which couples decide have children (there is a tentative link between the age of the parents, and child autism rates).

However, there is no single cause identified by a consensus of medical professionals.

You have asked a very difficult question to answer. No one really knows just exactly what causes autism. It was once thought that autism was caused by the union of two emotional refrigerators, but now that theory has been disproven. With the prevalence of drugs, some physicians believe that autism is a side effect of drug use during pregnancy.

With the advent of DNA and advanced research techniques, scientists have come to believe that autism is a communication disorder. Children with autism have great difficulty expressing their needs and wants.

Since there are degrees of autism, children with Asperger's Syndrome, a mild form of autism, do not have the difficulties in school as do the children who are true autistics.

Autism is a growing disability in the schools today. We are seeing more and more children with this problem coming into our schools every year. Where will it end? It must end with our generation. Please say NO to drugs.

There are many speculations as to why there is a rise in autism. My personal opinion is that awareness and knowledge has increased in recent years so doctors/psychologists are diagnosing it more. Many years ago (before many people knew what autism is) people who had autism were misdiagnosed with juvenile schizophrenia and were institutionalized. Now that there is more solid criteria for autism it is being diagnosed more often.

I do believe, though, that that is just part of the reason the numbers are rising, but I feel that is a big reason.

'so many' is very variable. It depends on the region, the habits, the parents of the person with autism, their gene mutations etc.

becuz the mom may be consuming too much alchohol or drugs, or either which parent could have a blood disorder. Or the mother could be eating too much of a food that you shouldn't eat when ur pregnant (like fish), or she could be taking drugs for her unborn child to be healthy, but they had the opposite affect.

much love
