Hands down it’s the Volvo 245 series wagon pretty much any year. Volvo stopped production of the 240-245 series in 1993 so from about 1985 to 1993 were the better years. I would stay away from the turbo engines and stick with the automatic with overdrive. On the open road I get 31 mpg and around town about 20-21 here in California.

Parts are available, they are easy to work on, and hold up a long time. I have had 4 volvo’s and all have over 180,000 on had 350,000 before I sold it. It is still running as I see it from time to time.

There is a reason American’s stopped producing wagon’s no market and they could not meet the fuel standards.

The Japanese make very good wagons, but are a bit over priced because they don’t break down like American cars. That’s my opinion, but I love my Volvo and refuse to get rid of my 1990 245, it still look brand new and made of steel.
