When the Lord finished His work on the earth, He ascended into Heaven. The period of time that started then began the Era of the Church. This era has been set aside for the Church to grow and for the Gospel to spread. The Chruch will become the Bride of Christ once it has grown to its fullest.
Christ is waiting for that day.
The prophets outline a series of events that let us know that the time of the second coming is near. That is a statement that has been said over and over, but there is one prophesy that is very prominant. The Bible indicates that the same generation that sees the rebirth of Israel as a nation will also see the second coming of Christ. If this statement is true (and the Bible has never made a prophesy that has not failed to come true) then the children who were alive in the mid 20th century will see the second coming.
There is some question as to what a "generation" is. Most people think that this is 75 years, and if that is true, then you can expect the Lord to return around 75 years after 1948 (when Israel was reforemed).
