And james b its a learning experince to give letures about somthing u know very little about. Its like your teacher asking you to write a report about a war then get up in front of the class and give a speech on it.

technically anything that holds a past energy is a residual energy
so this would include things like psychometry ( holding an item to read from )
as well as hauntings of course
edit
dont forget energy left over by the living also
in buildings they resided
not all ghosts are people who are no longer here
cleansing would be replacing the energy with another
if it is a haunting then it is most likely that it was frequented often by someone , so they left a huge impact on the atmosphere
create another energy to replace it
play songs , throw parties , sing ... happy vibes !

Energy will pocket and puddle in certain areas for unknown reasons. As many have said rhese areas are often seen as hauntings. The energy stagnates and sours with age so it is always a good thing to ground or help disapate this energy.
When we work with energy within a circle we draw up energy from below and call it down from above. Then it should be used for the reason it was called for and if any is unused it should be grounded. You might turn the lecture into shared workshop where many people share their thoughts concerning this subject after you have presented what residual energy is and the importance of proper grounding.

You need a basic purification ritual. But before you do that, check out whether the energy is useful to you. You may not want to banish it until you've had time to evaluate it carefully.
A purification ritual starts with physical purification. Clean the place thoroughly. Then light a white candle and do whatever else is necessary to you to feel the place is cleared. A circle of salt around the outside of the space to be cleared is often a good idea, but impractical at times. Smudging with sage is also good, although there are other incenses that would work, as well. Aquamarine or clear Beryl (aquamarine is also a beryl) are good for purification, but the best crystals will depend on what sort of energy is being cleared.
In the end, you will need to trust your own instincts, and your good will.

Many things carry residual energy. Batteries for one. Something that has been struck by lightning. Our bodies hold the energy of the food we eat. Plants hold the energy of the sun. It depends on what kind of residual energy your speaking of. For energy in individuals, science has shown that everything in the universe vibrates at a specific frequency. That vibration can be felt/seen by sensitive individuals. Try looking at vibrational energy, auras and energy, human energy (although you'll probably get a lot of energy sites like Energy companies). Hope this helps some. :)

.Basically, we 'program' reality around us all the time. Repeated and/or intense emotions and/or projected concepts can 'build up' in a place or object over time giving it an association with that emotion. Whenever I sleep in a motel room, it's unnerving for me and I don't sleep well. I'm guessing this is from residual energy left by multitudes of strangers sleeping in that bed. I'm going to take incense with me and cleanse the room next time I stay in a motel and see if that helps me sleep better.

Pangel's suggestions are right on target.
You could also talk about the Principle of Contagion and historic concepts surrounding it....as they are related.
The young folks will learn something new and the old folks will dig that you brought out a classic. A foundational classic them youngster got no business not knowing.
Edit: Salt and water, HEVE and LBRP

Is it common practice for pagans/wiccans to lecture on subjects they admittedly know nothing about?
