What if he's on antidepressants, and over 21? What if you've already contacted his therapist, case worker, etc? Any other ideas? I have to give advice to a friend, and am batting zero right about now. (Animals are so much easier, in so many ways.)

LOL! I agree, animals are easier.

Tell your friend to keep busy. She's gonna worry no matter what. Even if he were the perfect child, going off to college and you were rich, you'd still worry.

Worry is normal. But at some point, your friend needs to surrender to the fact that she's done her best, she raised him best she could and he is free to live his own life and make his own mistakes. She's gotta just stop interfering. She can offer him support, money, whatever. You can offer her a shoulder to cry on. At the end of the day, he's over 21 and is his own person.

Sometimes even young people on antidepressants need to leave home to move on with thier own life. Its hard on Mom who is sure that this kid isnt ready to be on his own. She can do somethings to make the transition easier- get him a phone so she can call him-even if Mom has to pay for it, she can go to his place and visit, but she shouldnt clean the place for him or do his laundry,if he is ready to be on his own he wont need her to do these things. She can invite him to dinner every week at least once and/or tell him if he has no food he can come home for dinner anytime. This way if he is hungry she can feed him, if his apt is clean and decent then she knows he isnt too depressed and she can call when ever she needs to. Warn her against doing too much helping - if he is ready to be on his own he shouldnt need it.

If he is on antidepressants, it is OK. Ask his mother to take Red Chestnut a Bach Flower essence. To know more about that and other essences, go to the free online course at:

Time heals all wounds -- it wasn't easy when my children
left the nest, but keep busy and don't mope on the subject
it's simply another stage of your life.
