How old are you? If you're 13+ and can carry on an intelligent conversation, I say join, but don't interrupt or butt in. If you're younger, introduce yourself politely, answer any questions posed to you, and then excuse yourself to do something quiet out of the way.

You might do best to ask your Dad what he'd prefer. Otherwise, just answer politely if someone asks you a question. And make a subtle exit if you're uncomfortable with the situation.
