This happens on both sides, believers and non-believers. Is it really so difficult to ask or answer a question, regardless of your belief system, with respect instead of feeling the need to ridicule and mock? Does it really make you feel better or superior? Is it impossible for each side to get along and respect the opinions and beliefs of another even if it differs from your own?

Bibs: I love the last part of your answer. That's a great answer to give non-believers when asking such questions about religion vs. science.

I am a Christian and have never done that, and I applaud your question. All sides do this. There is not often much respect or acceptance shown.

Bless you for trying. I have always tried to show respect to everyone. It's hard not to say something when you are ridiculed over and over for your faith.

To some extent it is a sign of insecurity in ones own beliefs... and trust me, it's not only here on R&S... drop by some of the political forums sometime... or the Environment forum.. if anything it's even worse on those... especially politics. Sometimes when one holds a set of beliefs (weather backed by science or faith) fervently one can get overly enthusiastic in a point stated. However I think what you mean is the mindless rants that occur... Again.. insecurity, fueled by hate... always a bad combination.

I can't speak for all atheists but my main interest is in returning fire against those who ask aggressive questions against atheism. I don't owe them my respect. If they feel ridiculed, good.

There are plenty of fine Christians here I like and admire enormously. They don't start aggression and I wouldn't dream of being hostile to them back. Believers are entitled to their beliefs. So am I.

A good point. Those Christians who ridicule or mock others are not acting in a very Christian manner. When you do this you act like those who mocked Christ at His death.

Faith is a God given gift, not something that can scientifically proven.

At times it happens when questions are posted that look like questions but are really attacking the other side.
I attack if I am attacked

It is always easy and much fun to ridicule people who take themselves too seriously. Placid and unperturbed people are much more difficult to ridicule.
