Asked a buddy who had it done recently, his was $500, but he'd been using that shop for a long time so that may have been 'friends and family' pricing. I'd expect to spend between $550 and $650. One of the greatest things about the 4.0 is they're so easy to work on. It will take you longer than a shop, so if you have another car to drive consider doing the job yourself. You'll learn a ton about the car, and all it will cost you is parts and beer and pizza money for the buddies you get to come help. :)

Oh yeah, don't forget the cost of the Factory Service Manual ($50 to $100 on ebay). If you're going to consider a DIY respond here and I'll track down a writeup for you.

Tastyfish hit it on the head, dude...what will cost you the excessive amount is labor...if you are going to take it in, have them check rear main seal, too..for sure.

The 4.0L engines are dynamite simple to put back together too, just follow the manual to the T, have help, and make sure to baby the seal until the job is done.

I would check the web and do some comparative shopping. One thing I can tell you as a girl, it's best to give an auto shop the idea that you know what you're talking about or they will take you for a ride ... and not in your car!
