Originally Bag Balm was used by dairy farmers on the cow's teets to prevent chapping. I've seen it used in households as long as I can remember. The green can was a staple at my Grandparent's home. The salve is softening and medicated so it's great to use on hands and feet to soften or abrasions.

It's original use? It was marketed to farmers for use on the udders of their dairy animals, to keep the teats soft. In the process of using it on the animals they found it helped soften their hands. Many use it to soften the calluses on their feet.

Some dermatologists recommend it for very dry skin. You could apply it thickly to your hands before you go to bed, wear some cotton gloves because it's pretty greasy.
