The USDA suggests that you get about half of your calories from carbohydrates. The amount of sugar you should eat depends on what you mean by sugar. The sugar found naturally in fruit and vegetables is OK because the fruits or vegetables add a lot of good nutrition. Sugar from corn syrup or table sugar should really be used sparingly because it adds no nutritional value, just empty calories. The USDA suggests that the amount of added sugar calories (that is -sugar not in the fruits or vegetables you eat) should fit into your daily discretionary calories. Your daily discretionary calories is the number of calories you can eat each day over the amount you need nutritionally and not gain weight.

If you work hard as an athlet, the amount (ideally) should be no more than 40 grams of glucose per day...
That amount of glucose (sugar), is the minimum that replenishes the storage of reserves in the liver (glycogen), and that is used in case of emergency only...(like the contents of a fire extinguisher)
If you have a sedentary way of life, or if you exercise minimally, you dont deed ANY amount of sugar....let me explain...
Most of the things we eat daily, contain some amounts of starch (bread, rice potatos, etc), and those, are transformed in GLUCOSE in the interior of the gut...
So, there are plenty of carbohydrates in the normal diet....and supplements are in fact, not needed...
a simple light diet of 1,500 kcal per day will do...You dont need sugar unless you are training for the next olimpics...
Cheers

The less the better. Sugar is full of empty calories and the complex carbohydrates are better sources of energy. But sugar can be very addictive and it is not easy to give it up (I am struggling!)

Refined sugar is the one to stay far, far away from: too much of that can give you diabetes or other health problems...

You should try to keep your sugar at a minimum. Satisfy your sweet tooth by eating good sugars like fruit, fruit juice, yogert, etc.
