Mine thinks its for standing on and has never pecked at it. will he get a nutritional imbalance from this?

Some of mine know what its for. Some like yours just sit on it.

I grate some off and sprinkle it over their seed so they have some when they eat I do the same with the grit.

Its for calcium for the bones and to make the eggs stronger.

Usually if you stick anything in the cage a budgie will have a go at it.
Mine ran away from the millet spray when I first introduced it, now he's a Millet junkie...

Give it time. they're picky birds.

Try yours on lettuce. They like that too

Yes they know what cuttlebone is for.

Some play with it for a little amusement but you only ever see them eat it when they need to eat it. Some small bones can last years & budgies won't eat it if they don't need it.

It's there for him to nibble on if he wants to. To insure proper nutrition, make sure to add a good pelleted feed (I use Zupreem) in addition to his seed mix. Just put some in a treat cup for him to nibble on. Or, you can put a hand mirror on the bottom of his cage and sprinkle pellets on that--many parakeets can't resist pecking at them as they look at their reflections. :)
