i need to pick out a slide from a power point presentation which is in a slide format and save it as a screen saver on my pc. the presentation was forwarded to me

You can directly and easily create screen saver from PowerPoint with some 3rd party presentation tool, such as Wondershare PPT2Flash Standard.

Take a screenshot by hitting the Print Screen button (or ALT + Printscreen for the active window only) then open your photoeditting software (such as MS Paint) and paste it. Then save it as a jpg or bmp to your computer. Afterwords use it to set it as a background or for a screensaver

Assuming you have PowerPoint, open up the presentation in it, go to the slide, right click on it and choose "Save as picture" and choose the location where you want to save it. It will be saves as a jpg.
