And thus shouldn't there be a law to provide adequate lighting system?

Never heard of such things . Depression is caused due to work load, targets not achieved, and failing to fulfil expectations of higher authorities in office or in home or in school.

the lighting does not disable your performance.

Yep- light is important for mental health.

I've had Seasonal Affective Disorder and bright lights really helped. You can buy expensive light boxes, but I just rigged up a string of very bright full-spectrum bulbs. I looked up the specs for light boxes (through ads for them on the web!) and made sure I had enough bulbs to produce the required lumens. It's not necessary to look at the lights directly, just do your ordinary stuff in the bright light. For me, two or three hours in the bright lights, three or four times a week in winter was enough.

It might matter what time of day you get the light- you can do research on SAD- in books and on the web. Most people need morning light, but I needed evening.

Can you bring more light into your workplace- like bright lamps from home? Also, getting outside in the sun is a good thing.

I'm guessing there are laws about adequate lighting in the workplace, but what's considered adequate in general, might not be adequate for you.

There is a particular form of depression called Seasonal Affective Disorder where the patient becomes depressed in the winter. Since the treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder is actually exposure to bright light, it's believed that the darker days of winter trigger the depression in these patients.

So to answer your question, a person with true Seasonal Affective Disorder could be triggered by poor lighting in the workplace. But the majority of depression probably could not be triggered by low lighting.
