For the 2007 2.5S with automatic transmission, the EPA fuel estimate is 26/34. However, the altima coupe with xtronic cvt fuel estimate is 23/31. The engine is the same and the coupe is smaller and lighter. And at the dealerships, they have the fuel estimate at 21/26. Whats going on?

The estimate formulas have recently changed to a new standard that gives a lower reading. Search for more information on it.

New more realistic speed is used while making the 2008 numbers... Listen to a Nissan ad tivo it and they say the new mileage (flash a disclaimer your mileage may vary) 36 miles a gallon Sentra Versa and now 31 highway for 2.5 liter Altima.
Customers coming in to the service department complaining my car gets XX miles a gallon EPA says XY My pathfinder gets 14 miles a gallon. What the customer is not telling you he lives 10 miles from work 4miles city streets pulls onto the highway floors the throttle rips up to 80 talking on the phone braking hard and accelerating like a mad man. Average speed easy on the throttle. I generally have to take the customer out to the gas station next to the highway on ramp fill up till the nozzle clicks off. Pull smoothly onto the highway set the automatic speed control at 65 miles and hour drive 15 minutes turn around drive back to the same gas station same pump and fill till click once again divide gallons into miles. Generally I make over what EPA says. And the car owner is flabbergasted. There is still something wrong with my car!!! I can't drive like that "THERE'S YOUR SIGN"

The engine may very well be the same, but the coupes are a sportier car, which means that they may have other parts to enhance performance. Also, that custom variable transmission could result in you losing some gas mileage over a transmission that would simply function one way.

with all new models for 2008 vehicles doesnt matter which manufacture will have the new epa testing on it, that is why the 2007 sedan shows better gas mileage due to the old epa test while the new 2008 will be different

it is possible you seen the numbers for the model with the bigger engine. the altima coupe has a 6 cylinder like the 350z but it is slightly tuned down about 25 or 30hp.

CVTs get lower mileage and suck. EPA ratings were also adjusted to a more realistic number.
