Why Do Golf Handicap #s go up on the back nine of a nine hole course?

On a golf course, one nine has even-numbered handicaps, and the other nine has odd-numbered.

The USGA recommends using odd numbers on the front nine, and even numbers on the back, and not using low handicaps on the beginning or end of the nine. But those are just recommendations.

Aside fom that, everything depends on the specific course.

Interesting.....I've never seen a 9 hole course with different handicap #'s on the score card for the second nine.

so you can score better on the front, find what you're doing right and wrong on that particular day, and have a better idea of how to score on the back nine - not all courses are like that though
