we're told time and time again by the nanny state what is good for us and they always find a way to tax it. why has it not been made law for cyclelist to wear helmets even if it is for kids under a certain age.surely this would save live's .or is it because there's no money to be made from such a law?

i asked this question only because we had a freind of our 7 yr old daughter stay over and the friend didn't want to wear a helmet but we told him he had to if he wanted to go out for a bike ride. he did wear it and was quite happy with it.
our government is always making up or changing laws "for the good of the nation"ie stopping fast food ads for kid's stopping kingsized mars bars adding tax to this and that so we don't buy as much ie booze, fags . yet in one area where live's and serious injury could be saved i've not heard a thing.
i'm not in favour of a dictatorship but as we already seem to have one do feel that it should be law for kids at least under 10 to wear helmets.

A bicycle isn't motorized and young ones are greater probably to fall off a bike than an grownup. maximum grownup injuries are bicycle/motor vehicle collisions or table certain merchandise collisions (a minimum of those requiring some form of scientific care). i think of an grownup could make that determination for themselves the comparable as an grownup could make a selection as to if to placed on a helmet whilst horsebackriding, working, boating or snowboarding. you go with the money to enforce the regulation, and there in basic terms are not adequate police officers to problem with what's largely an grownup determination. in spite of seatbelt rules, that are significant, you're no longer ticketed until you have been stopped for something else. i do no longer in any way help a regulation requiring bike helmets for adults. i think of our lives are already sufficiently micromanaged.

if you ride a bike,,, then wear the ______ helmet --- the gov't people assume that adults can either break a helmet in a crash or if the "adults" are too hard headed to wear the hat then they can just break their skull bones ------------- trying to get those gov't ""crash dummies and law makers"" enact laws that are good for us is near to the IMPOSSIBLE ... do what is good for you and your family and ignore the rest (( they don't pay your bills )) Good Luck .......some states have the law to wear the helmet .....>>>>>>>>>>>>

Yes, I believe so.( I grew up never wearing a seat belt also, then when the laws came out I started wearing it all the time and still do to this day. It saved my life.)
A case-control study of the effectiveness of bicycle safety helmets
Thompson RS, Rivara, Thompson DC. The New England Journal of Medicine Vol 320:21 pp1361-7, 1989.
A study conducted at five hospitals in Seattle between December 1986 and December 1987 of cyclists admitted to an emergency room. Of 776 cyclists admitted, 269 had head injuries. 235 of these, and 433 of the 507 cyclists who were admitted without head injuries, completed a questionnaire. The study concluded that cycle helmets reduce the risk of head injury by 85% and of brain injury by 88%.

Well ,according to our government, a Sikh is allowed to just wear a turban. It is a thing that has always made me laugh. Crash helmets have to pass all sorts of tests, but a bit of rag round your head is really safe ! !

A lot of people wont wear a helmet because they think they look stupid in it. If everyone had to wear them then we would all look the same.

Dave,
You make an excellant point of people who ride a bike to wear a helmet. I know where you are coming from and agree with you. Adults can fend for themselves as far as helmets are concerned but I worry about children who fall off bike and not wearing a helmet.
