We see images of what a family should be, wither it be Ozzie and Harriet or Ozzy Osbourne.

There is a tendency to try and emulate that family. For years, my wife wanted to be the Waltons, when i said we were probably closer to being the Simpsons

The "media" refers to public distribution of information by way of television, radio, newspapers, magazines, etc. So your references could be any two of those. The statement itself means that the news-disseminating references above have influenced the way we perceive the family. For example, you may be listening to the news on TV, where a broadcaster is talking about gun control. Small children may be viewing this information, and seeing the effects of a drive-by shooting in a neighborhood. They could easily form the wrong opinion of guns, thinking it's okay to own one and use it to shoot a person walking down the street. Or some of the advertising commercials have a powerful influence on the buying habits of the family. In other words, family structure has changed with the influence of the sources that bring news into living rooms of our society, here in the U.S. and all over the world, for that matter.

The media does not put a positive spin on the American family anymore because there is so many broken homes which affect today's children and also creates friction between the divorced parents. The media needs to stay out of peoples homes and concentrate on the news that is important. Now that is not to say that the family isn't important but they put to much emphasis on it. They need to focus on the positive that comes out of the family and not the negative. At least this is what I feel.

Today, the media has all the power. Instead of television imitating life, now life imitates television. We are fed extremely liberal views on the news because Hollywood is liberal. The media has redifined the family as consisting of whoever you "choose" to be in your family. Homosexual marriage is now portrayed as just one of many choices. The family used to be defined as the traditional mom, dad, and children.
I think we should blow up our T.V.s and stop being brainwashed!
