PLEASE!! - ANY service other than from a local CO land line has a power failure issue. MANY people still have this problem with CO service because all their phones plug into an AC outlet.
I have had VOIP service for years. I got it when I got cable internet. No more need for land line. Cheap. everything included. I have the modem and adapter connected to a UPS so when power fails I still can have service for a long time.
NO it is NOT as clear or reliable as a land line. It IS better than a cell phone but not mobile.
HOWEVER, it is cheap, you can move across the country and take it with you, you can have phone numbers many places in the country for friends to make local calls to you, all services you could want are included, all calls in the US are free.
For the cost and the services I can tolerate some issues. I switched from Vonage to Sunrocket because of poor customer service, call quality and total cost.
Sunrocket isn't perfect either but I am not willing to pay what others want and I have a backup cell phone. If you call at the right time you can get 2 years for $200.
If you don't have a cell phone for backup you have more to be concerned about. But with the cost saving you can afford one.
It also helps if you are or have access to a technically competent person who can tell the customer service person how to solve any technical issue you may have.
All said - I won't change unless it goes totally down the drain. Then I would use cell only if I had to pay land line prices.

Best VOIP Service Provider. Internet Phone Service lets you make and receive broadband phone calls to or from any number using an ordinary telephone, a WiFi telephone, or your own SIP phone.

Well if you live in the NY, NJ or CT area you could get cablevision optimum voice(voip) but you would have to get optimum online (broadband). I have it over a year and no complaints. Free unlimited call in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. Free unlimited 411 and many features all for 34.95. You can also get their triple play package phone, tv, internet all for 29.95 each for a year.

Personally I hate all voice over ip phone companies, the quality is just plain horrible, and if your power goes out so does your phone. I would personally go with any form of cable phone service or "digital", it is cheap and reliable.
