Civil engineers generally are involved in the design of public works. These include large buildings, roads, bridges, water distribution systems, dams, sewage treatment plants, and flood protection systems, such as levees and seawalls.

Within the Civil Engineering field there are many specialties, such as structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, hydraulic engineers, and environmental engineers.

What Civil engineers, and most other engineers do is develop drawings and plans for things. If you want to build a large office building you will need a number of engineers with different specialties. The structural engineer designs the structure, doing calculations to make sure it will stand up to the wind loads, live loads, and earthquake loads, and other loads. Then he selects the sizes and shapes for all the structural components, and makes drawings showing how everything is to be put together.

The foundation engineer investigates the ground conditions, and designs the foundations for the structure, doing similar calculations and making drawings.

The mechanical engineer designs the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC), The electrical engineer designs the electrical system, and the hydraulic engineer designs the water distribution and sewage collection system. They all work together with the architect and the builder to get the job done. Many drawings are required, along with specifications of the types of materials to be used. The drawings are then released to building contractors who buy the materials and build the building. Many different specialized contractors are also required for a large building.

A civil engineer is a person who practices civil engineering planning, designing, constructing, maintaining, and operating infrastructures as well as improving existing infrastructure. They work in a variety of locations and conditions both outdoor and indoors.

Everyone needs a Civil Engineer .... be it their own homes, offices, schools, hospitals, roads, airports, etc. Civil engineers design, build, and maintain roads and bridges, drinking water and energy systems, sea ports and airports, and the infrastructure etc. Apart from construction, Civil engineers provide CAD Design and Drafting Services for Civil Engineering, Civil site designs, Civil Construction Drawings, Structural Engineering, traffic and transportation engineering and Land Development Design projects.

Civil Engineers design:

bridges
roads
buildings
runways
airports
earth dams
basement systems
deep foundations
holding ponds
retention ponds
detention ponds
pumphouses
drainage systems
contamination fixes
wastewater treatement plants
storm water discharge facilites

and oh so much more.

In addition to that, they sometimes go on yahoo answers and answer questions.

Civil engineers are needed when:
contamination is found
water is overflowing a road way
a high load hit occurs on a bridge
a bridge rusts or deteriorates and needs repair
water discharge is needed
when sewer systems are combined
when a builder is trying to set a foundation of a house and finds silt

you get the idea... CE's do the design work for public/private buildings and facilities.

The job role of a civil engineer is extremely important as it equates for the overall safety of society in many different facets. A civil engineer is responsible for using their civil engineering background to plan and oversee various construction efforts in many different areas of this field. They will apply civil engineering principles to ensure that structures are constructed in the safest, sturdiest manner. One general responsibility of the civil engineer is to analyze various factors concerning a construction job. The civil engineer will analyze the proposed site location as well as the entire construction job which is to be completed at such a site. They will analyze the process for completing the construction job every step of the way. They must also plan the construction project that will be taking place in conjunction with the results they found due to their analysis of the proposed project. During the process and at the end, the civil engineer must inspect the product to ensure that all rules, regulations and guidelines have been explicitly followed. They are the people behind the scenes of construction jobs which result in important buildings and structures throughout one’s city or hometown. They ensure not only that the buildings are constructed in a proper fashion but an expedient one as well. Should problems arise, they are the ones who step in to take control and come up with possible solutions
