I have been off sick from my job for 4 months and it does not seem likely thay I will be returning to work in the near future. I am very conciouse that this is inconvenient to my employer but I am worried that insurances I have will be invalid if I just retire from my job. I am 63 years old.

Do you have long-term disability?

You can qualify for that as well as social security disability.

Your employer no longer has to secure your job, b/c any time coming to you through the Family Medical Leave Act has come and gone.

When you retire, you start with medicare, unless your employer provides another option.

You can buy Cobra for up to 18 months so if you are 63.5 you can make it to Medicare. Finding private insurance is probably not going to happen if you aren't well. If you aren't quite 63.5 try to work a little more if you can. Apply for SSD but it will take years to appeal but it will be retroactive and you could get on Medicare early.
