If you believe god is responsible for floods and earthquakes, you have bigger issues to contend with.
I'd watch Nova, National Geographic or pick up a science book first if I were you.
And atheism isn't a religion by the way.

I would much rather think it is the unveiling of universal truths in different ways. Through out all religions you can find a set of core beliefs. These are expressed differently in each religion based on a background that the founding society can accept. And at times when a religion is off step with the message, a new messenger is sent ( Jesus/Buddha). We as a people search out that which is different from each other. Instead we should look for the similarities and put aside our differences. I don't believe this will ever happen though. The competitive nature of man to be right especially when wrong is to strong.

The fact that there are so many different religions is very conducive to the probability that all of them were created by people. Suffering is part of life. If there actually was a loving god, suffering would not exist. Scary huh? Well, you could live in a fantasy world and believe that if you are a good person, you you receive an eternal reward for you efforts or you could be realistic and be good because it is innate in human nature, and look forward to resting in peace someday. Concur your fear of death; that is why people invented religion.

I don't picture a God who desires conflict between humans. I believe you are trying to explain the various world religions. There is another way to do it which does not put God in this position. God has revealed Himself in many ways to humankind. Humankind cannot understand the totality of God. If we could, we would be God. The various world religions resulted from humans who had been contacted by God, but who were still limited by their lack of understanding and by the customs and prejudices of their society, trying to express the nature of their experience of God. That persons of different cultures would express that in different ways is to be expected. This idea honours God as the source of good (and not of conflict), but requires humility, as a person who accepts this can no longer assert that his own religion is total truth and all others are totally false.

I say no.
I think that God gave mankind free will and therein lies the crux of people going astray. Also, much of the suffering is not an end of God but the result of that free will working itself out in history.
Earthquakes, floods, and other calamity associated with the physical earth are more the results of nature. There is a difference between "making it happen" and "letting it happen".
We are too inclined to impose our wills on others and this is the root of the rise of megalomaniacs like Kim Jung Il, Nikolai Ceaucescu, Stalin, Hitler, Saddam and his hell spawn sons -- who exert their strong arm tactics on those who are too weak or too afraid to stop them prior to their crimes against humanity via regimes bent on international tragedy.
We are in an environment which is subject to it's own rules and propensities of interaction between both itself and us.

Damn, that's deep....
First off, we all have Free Will, so I think that it is MAN who intentionally created different religions (possibly to make us fight amongst ourselves....)
I think that God allows many disturbing things to go on for many reasons, and I try to look at everything as a learning experience and an opportunity to better understand my purpose, my fellow man and my Creator.

What makes you think God created different religions? God created man with "free will", man created religions. If God gets the blame when bad things happen does he get the thanks when good things happen?

No, God didn't do it for this reason. He knew that man would mess up the religion. He wants us to unify in harmony and love. The evolution of our souls is about this, as we learn the lessons needed to have total peace within our eternal souls.
