I read about some business men (vets?) who have upgraded a service person's ticket to first class using their own flying miles. Back in 71, I was assigned a seat (11E) that was already taken by someone else. She got all snotty, The flight attendant (she was a 'stewardess' then) took me (in uniform) to first class. I met...Stephen King , my seat mate for the flight from D.C. to L.A.
When I came back from Viet Nam in '67, I got talking to the ticket agent. He excused himself. When he came back he said to see 'Carol' at the door when I got on the plane. She had me wait a bit, then escorted me to a first class seat for my trip from San Francisco to Chicago.

The airlines will do it if there is room. My hubby came home last month for R&R and flew first class the entire time he was on a commercial flight. He of course didnt ask for this it was just done. He said it didnt seem like rank had anything to do with it either. They are also encouraged to travel in uniform to show pride.

Nope, but I've flown in uniform before and a flight attendant upgraded me to first class, which was cool. Although there are regulations prohibiting soldiers in uniform from sitting first class. They say they don't want civilains who's taxes pay our salary thinking that we make more than them, or we're more privledged than them. Its a retarded rule, but rules are rules.

Nope, not as a general rule. Now, you might get occasionally bumped to first class, just like any other person might. But as policy... forget it! These are the airlines that charge more for a "military discount" ticket than for just a standard nonrefundable ticket!

Nope, they have been given upgrades out of generosity by the airlines on occasions but it not a matter of airline policy to do so.

i dont think so but if you wear your uniform (even though they say dont cuz you dont want to be a hostage, blah blah blah) they tend to upgrade you if there is space. and from past flights, i didnt get upgraded but i did get free drinks. jack and coke when i was only 19 years old. pretty good deal.
