My father used to say he'd throw his money into the air: whatever "god" wanted he could take, whatever fell down was my father's.

Tithing was at a time when there were no payroll deductions and income tax. Assess your finances honestly. Remember to render to Caesar the things that are Ceasar's (in other words, pay your just debts), then choose a smaller percentage, say 3%, and start giving that amount. Next year, try to increase the percentage. As you go along, you will find that there are a lot of unnecessary purchases you're making now that you really can get along without--but, don't give up the essentials. Good Luck.

There is nothing mentioned about tithing in the new testament. In the old testament, the Law or Government - was the "church". The tax money or tithe was for them, the government, to educate the people on the Laws. Jesus said to pay the tax to those that call for the tax. This means the government, not the christian church which had no shape or form at the time.

I have often wondered about that. The only mention ( that I know... correct me if I am wrong ) of tithes was in the book of Malachi in the Old Testament. In Islam, it is called Zakath. The money is collected once a year, and used to be distributed among those stricken with poverty or calamities among the islamic community.
But many Christian friends have said after Jesus' arrival, he had wiped clean the old laws, but yet, many churches put pressure and guilt into parishioners to commit a tithe.
A christian friend whom I have known for about 8 years said this, she is a deacon in a church, she believes, tithes should come from the heart. Whatever you can offer to God is a good tithe. God's eyes do not sparkle with $$$ signs if you offer more, nor burn with anger if you offer less, but with Deep Sincerity. If His eyes DO go Ka-Ching, then you are worshipping the wrong God or at the wrong church

It is really a matter between you and God. What does the Spirit speak to your heart concerning this? While it is not stated as a requirement in the NT covenant, many feel it is representative of their faith and trust in God's provision in their life and in the lives of other people. It does not always have to go to the church, though they do need some support to keep the lights on, for the pastor and other people there, etc. God will also present opportunities to help others... a meal for someone, medications for another, or to help a co-worker stretch till payday. There are other charitable and non-profit groups that need help with the hungry and homeless. Your tithes can be sown to all these and more.. There is truth to the adage that it is more blessed to give than to receive.. and you may find that it is in the giving that we do receive! It is one of the few things God says, "Test me in this...."

There's no law that says you must tithe. Organized religion is a business. Decide if you want to support the club or worship. Don't get wrapped up in the Old Testament - those rules were for a different era.

Tithing is something that is done out of obedience to God's Word.
Mal 3:8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
Mal 3:9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.
Mal 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
I know it is difficult to understand but it is through obedience to God's Word that the blessings of God flow.

the giving/tithe of 10% was directed to the Isrealites when they were to live according to the Mosaic laws and the covenent that was in place at that time.
since the death of Jesus, we have been living under a new covenent that is mainly devoted toward love. Jesus did not command to tithe 10%

1. Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God.
2. Tithing is scriptural and should be done.
3. The Lord loves a cheerful giver, so give in good cheer and faith that it is obedience to God.
4. Throughout my life, whenever I tithed faithfully, the funds for all my needs were always there...sometimes in ways I could have never expected. Whenever I was not faithful in my tithing, I struggled with my finances. Read "The Miracle of Tithing"
Now, as for your taxes, it is time for all of us to step forth and demand that we are tired of paying for the welfare of the lazy or the drug addicted. That we are tired of paying for the transvestite beauty pagent (disguised as an AIDS awareness rally) with our tax dollars. That the bridge to nowhere in Alaska will NOT BE TOLERATED! As long as we sit back and do not demand our politicians to stop wasting our tax dollars in such ways, it will only get worse.

Paying tithes not only shows loyality to God, but it also helps out the church and futhers the outreach for the true intent, saving sinners. A lot of churches misuse the funds tho.
