Ave Maria means Hail Mary so it all depends on the church, some will use Maria as Mary

The woman's name was actually Miriam, a Hebrew name. "Maria" is the Latin translation of that name, and Latin was used as the language of both the educated classes and the Catholic church for centuries. "Mary" is the English translation of "Maria", in France the name is "Marie". . The Irish translation of the name is "Moira". The name varies slightly from language to language around the world.

Maria is Latin for Mary, as in "Ave Maria". No biblical person, including Jesus, was actually called by the English names we use, because none of them spoke English!

Mary is obviously right. In hebrew and Arabic there are differences perhaps. In the Qur'an we call her Maryam. Translation from hebrew could be more abrupt, so perhaps they called her Maria.

yeah, it's a cultural difference... do you go to a mostly hispanic church by chance? The other poster is right...Maria is the spanish version of Mary.

If that trips you out, you should see how Jesus is pronounced in different languages: Yeshua, Gesù, Jesús (hey-zeus),etc..

LOL.

Mary is English.

Maria is Spanish.

Same name, different language.

It's not always about who's "right" or "wrong".
