Roscoe, have you ever read the History of Vietnam or actually been there? Vietnam was not lost militarily, it was lost by a president (Lydon Johnson) and his secretary of Defense (Robert MacNamara) who had a problem with the truth. It was also lost by an American people who didn't challenge their leaders until 58,000 of their fellow Americans died, in an unjust and unnecessary war.
The Tet offensive should have been the beginning of the end for the communist north, having lost close to 80,000 of it's troops during that period. Instead, Johnson decided he'd had enough, and stopped any further troop escalation that was needed and requested by Gen. Westmoreland, to finish the job.
The tempo of the American people had changed after this, because the military victories were few and far between. Politics and negotiations with the NVA representatives took over, until a final withdrawal was decided. This took place in 1975, almost ten years after the first wave of American troops was sent there.
The war in Afghanistan and Iraq has very little similarity to Vietnam, although the democrats believe their opposition will get them into office. This war with Islam will last a long, long time, whether we stay or go. If the democrats are successful in gaining the political momentum and do withdraw the troops, it will be a terrible mistake.
The people of Iraq will be the first to suffer, as will its democracy. The democracy in Afghanistan will soon come tumbling down, as well. The US will become a bigger target than it was on 9/11. Then, and only then, will the citizens of the western world realize just how big a mistake it is, to believe that Islam and Iran's government, should not have been destroyed, before Johnny came marching home !

The problem is, what is an enemy combatant? When a country is engaged in all-out war, where do the targets end? In the middle ages, the armies wandered over the landscape, and the local peasants would not even know a war was on unless the battle happened on their land. With industrialization and mechanization, the scope of war widened. The war involved not only the soldiers - it included the airfields and the ammunition factories, the trains that took supplies to the front, the factories that made ball bearings or repaired trucks; the facilities than produced food for the soldiers and factory workers, and the roads that supplied those workers, and the workers themselves, the bureaucrats that organized the supply trains. This is what brought the USA into WWI (not WWII). The Germans believed that shipping supplies to their enemy England meant the ships were fair game, and they started sinking shipping bound for Britain. There's some suggestion that Churchill, as Navy Minister, had included war supplies on the Lusitania passenger ship, which the Germans sunk. Essentially everyone is a target. What about children? Old people? Well, when the whole industrial complex is a target, should you spare it because a child might get hurt? What about, for example, Hezbollah in Lebanon last year? They would deliberately fire rockets from the centre of towns, hoping Israeli retaliation would create photo-ops of "israeli brutality". The Iraqi insurgents are playing the same game. Should a government's supply lines or armies be left alone because one child might get hurt? Should we encourage human shields, or make it clear they will not work? That's probably safer for civilians in the long run. Watch the movie "Letters From Iwo Jima". It took such a huge task force to take one tiny island. Japanese soldiers fought to the death rather than surrender. The top brass said "Holy ****! What's it going to cost to take the Japanese mainland???" No wonder they were inclined to use the atomic bomb, which cost no American lives. Incidentally, even after 2 Japanese cities were wiped off the map (and most of the rest were firebombed to ashes) a group of army brass tried to stage a coup and prevent the emperor from surrendering. That's what the Americans were up against. I don't think it's a matter of apologizing; at most, anyone involved in a war should say "we are all truly sorry that it had to come to this." But once it's war, it's whatever it takes to win without losing your soul. After all, any side that truly cared could simply surrender if they were that worried about loss of life.

My Father was in the Vietnam war and I can say that it wasn't just the US that was killing people you also need to think of what the Vietnam people did with their own kids or an kids. And if the US didn't care so much then why in the world would they not kill the small kids over there even if they had something to do with being part of a trap.
I'm sorry but all of you need to stop with this US did this and US did that and how bad the US is because may-be some of you need to go back and see what some of these other countries did in their past like the UK, Japan, and every other country in this world. Then tell me if the US is such a bad country. Then why is it when every one needs help they always call on the US to help them.

Some once said. God and soldiers,All men adore, in times of trouble then no more. When war is ended and wrongs are righted, God is forsaken and the soldier is slighted. The American politicians are more worried about world opinion and world trade and collateral damage than winning a war.We won a truce in Korea because Eisenhower threatened to drop a big bomb if the N.Koreans did'nt sign . Can you say Hiroshima and nagasaki. I think it is funny when some Idiot from a country that cant defend it's self and is free because of america tell's me how wronge we are. The Prime Minister of England said it all when he said,The true test of a Great Nation is in HOW many people want to Immigrate there and how many want leave.
The fact's are there for all to see. I would like to know if the little Richard Noggin who asked this question lives the U.S.A. or his sorry little country.

Yeah, let america fall and see what happens to the rest of the world.
America is the worlds 911 service. If any country is ever in trouble, who do they call?
That's right, us.
Why?
Because it is what we do as a country, we help out people in need, and everyone knows this. Exactly the opposite of those scumbags you think so highly of, who send their people into foreign countries ONLY to kill people because they don't live they way they do or share their same beliefs.

You must have not studied much American history since the end of the Second World War:
Korea - the South remains free
Vietnam - it was lost, but communism did not spread to the rest of SE Asia
End of Cold War - We won, they lost pretty clearly.
Iraq I - Kuwait was freed
Bosnia - the violence stopped
Kosovo - Kosovo is on the way to independence
Afghanistan - Removed the Taliban
Not a bad record I must say...

Why don't you renounce your American Citizenship and move to Iraq. It's people like you that should not have the freedom our soldiers have fought for over the decades. If you think America deserves to be humiliated, I'd like to humiliate you, you piece of animal waste!
