No, there really is no down side (besides the more frequent urge to pee and needing to fill his bowl more often) I bet if you doubled your water intake you would be healthier, your dog is much the same. It is possible to drown yourself by drinking too much, but your dog would get sick long before that happened. Odds are he is hot and/or just thirsty. ½ his body weight in ounces of water is perfectly health for your dog (and you for that matter). If he has issues with peeing in the house or needing to go out after you go to bed you can limit his water before bed or when you can’t let him out, just like you would a child.
There are some medical things that could cause him to drink too much, but they are not likely. Take him to a vet, its a cheap and easy test and then you can sleep easy knowing your dog is just fine.

are you sure the dog is drinking that much water.
I have a dog and I was worried about his water intake. I went to the vet and had blood work done to rule out any issues.
He was perfectly fine.
well come to find out after keeping an eye on him all day he was PLAYING in the water bowl. But it has been 110 here so he was drinking more water but not as much as I though.
I would take him in and have blood work done to rule out any health issues.
there are many BAD health issues with lots of water intake.
from diabetes to liver and or kidney issues.

Drinking a lot of water is good for him. Nature knows best anyway, he drinks as much as he needs. However, drinking excess water sometimes is an indication of diabetes or renal failure. So it is best to have blood tests for glucose levels, urea and creatinine done to the dog. If those tests turn out Ok, then there is no worry.

I'd mention it to the vet, excessive thirst and peeing a lot are signs of diabetes.
The other thing you might consider is that he may be fascinated with the flowing water in the bowl. I have a cat that is obsessed with running water and we had to discontinue the use of that kind of bowl.

Probably just not thirsty. She will drink when she is. You need to take that dog to the vet first thing in the morning and get her scanned to see if she has a microchip. You dont know how that dog got on your porch. Maybe someone else saw her wandering in your yard and thought it was your dog and tied her there. She could be someones beloved lost pet and it is VERY selfish to not even attempt to see if she has a home.

You should probably consult your vet just in case. Drinking excessive water could just be that your pet is hot or maybe he has a thyroid or sugar issue. I wouldn't deam it as an immediate emergency unless you see other symptoms. But I would schedule a visit to the vet for some blood work just to be safe.

Sudden increase in water intake and urination (polydipsia/polyurea) is NOT normal for dogs or cats. These symptoms are the first signs of several very serious conditions, including kidney disease, urinary tract infection, diabetes, Cushing's disease, and hypothyroidism. These conditions require blood tests and urinalysis to determine which is the problem, and then they all require treatment and further blood tests to ensure balance.
Please see your vet asap, before any one of these diseases continue, they will only get worse without treatment and your dog will suffer.

You should be happy. It is very important that all animals get plenty of fresh water every day. Stop and think about how many drinks you enjoy durring a normal day....I would worry more if he didn't drink & pee.....

Think about it it's not unhealthy for us to consume alot of water so why should it hurt your dog. I am sure it is just the weather and he is a thirsty dog. Be worried if he isn't drinking.

Does he have a thick coat? If he does, it is like walking around with a winter coat when it's summer. He is probably trying to keep cool.
I have a Newfoundland. I have to fill his bowl three times a day because of that.
