The Holy Spirit is described in the Bible as a power at work in the lives of people, dealing with them and revealing more fully God and His will for mankind.

The Holy Spirit was given to live inside those who believe in Jesus, in order to produce God's character in the life of a believer. Christians are told to walk in the Spirit (Gal. 5:25) and be filled with the Spirit (Eph. 5:18). In a way that we cannot do on our own, the Holy Spirit will build into our lives love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Gal. 5:22-23). Rather than trying to be loving, patient, kind, God asks us to rely on Him to produce these qualities in our lives.

How do you know its the Holy Spirit "talking"? What actually happens, it seems, to me anyway, that God speaks to us not only in our hearts but in our circumstances and lives and through other believers. If you feel called by God to do something improbable and things start falling into place, that would be partial confirmation. Likewise if you're feeling tugged by God against something you want to do and obstacles start popping up, that would be a kind of confirmation.

The Holy Spirit's role is that of comforter, teacher, protector, guide....

John 14:16- Jesus told his followers that after his death God would send another Comforter- The Holy Spirit.

John 15:26- Jesus further explains that this other Comforter will also testify of him.

This next part isn't based on scripture, but I think it eloquently illustrates the point.
A man had been participating in a Bible-study group. They'd discussed how God blesses people, and this man had really struggled with that. As he left, he prayed to be given a sign that God hears and answers prayers.
Something told him to go buy a jug of milk. It didn't make sense to him to buy milk, so he didn't. Again, the impression came that he should go to a store and buy milk on the way home. He decided there must be a reason, so he went and got some milk.
As he was walking home with this jug of milk, again, "something" told him that he needed to knock on this one door. He had no clue who lived there, but he felt that he needed to knock on that door. It was late at night, but he did it anyway.
The family that lived there was very poor, and didn't have money to buy milk for their baby. As the man left their home, this time, without the milk, he prayed and thanked God for the opportunity to help Him bless others.

The Holy Spirit to me is our connection to GOD or our guide to the truth. Some may call it the sub-conscience. I personally cannot connect it with any church or a common school of thought. Each of us have a different connection and a different agenda in this life spiritually!

THE Bible's use of "holy spirit" indicates that it is a controlled force that Jehovah God uses to accomplish a variety of his purposes. To a certain extent, it can be likened to electricity, a force that can be adapted to perform a great variety of operations.

At Genesis 1:2 the Bible states that "God's active force ["spirit" (Hebrew, ru'ach)] was moving to and fro over the surface of the waters." Here, God's spirit was his active force working to shape the earth.

God uses his spirit to enlighten those who serve him. David prayed: "Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Your spirit [ru'ach] is good; may it lead me in the land of uprightness." (Psalm 143:10) When 70 capable men were appointed to help Moses, God said to him: "I shall have to take away some of the spirit [ru'ach] that is upon you and place it upon them."—Numbers 11:17.

Bible prophecy was recorded when men of God were "borne along by holy spirit [Greek, from pneu'ma]." (2 Peter 1:20, 21) In this way the Bible was "inspired of God," the Greek word for which is The·o'pneu·stos, meaning "God-breathed." (2 Timothy 3:16) And holy spirit guided certain people to see visions or to have prophetic dreams.—2 Samuel 23:2; Joel 2:28, 29; Luke 1:67; Acts 1:16; 2:32, 33.

The holy spirit impelled Jesus to go into the wilderness after his baptism. (Mark 1:12) The spirit was like a fire within God's servants, causing them to be energized by that force. And it enabled them to speak out boldly and courageously.—Micah 3:8; Acts 7:55-60

By his spirit, God carries out his judgments on men and nations. And God's spirit can reach everywhere, acting for people or against them.—Psalm 139:7-12.

He is our guide, comforter, protector and teacher. He seals the church, ie; believers in Jesus Christ. He will only be here for a limited time, then he will be taken up, as will the Church.
