yes, i have in the past, likened it to a wife who defends her abusive husband. eventually she comes to believe that she deserves what she gets, and that the husband is actually being kind to her when she only gets a small beating rather than a large one.

Is that you, Bill? You sound bitter, and I wonder if you have been badly hurt by things that have happened in your life. To be sure, many of us have been kicked around as well. Look at the brutal, senseless slaughter in the middle east, which seems to worsen daily. Look at America's crime rate, etc etc. I don't know about others, but I don't worship anybody, let alone whatever the creative source is. Neither do I hate "god" ---or humanity. I don't buy what's in the Bible, and I think its silly to get down on my knees and worship a "being" who may or may not exist. And who if it does, doesn't give a rat's behind whether it's worshiped or not. I hold "god" to be neutral in all matters. After the creation, or whatever, god in effect said said "let it be."And since "god" is a force, no human emotions were involved. That's what we fail to remember whether worshiping or blaming it. The "seven deadly sins", including hate and greed are not of god. They are human attributes, which we tack on to "him." Having limited intellectual capacity, we anthropomorphize what we can't even begin to understand. So I just live my life as best I can, try not to hurt myself or others. and not to go overboard on anything ( except maybe Yahoo Q and A, ha ha). And that's the re--st of the story. Have a good day.

When one holds a deity to human standards, which are the only standards humans have, that deity will appear to be an "abusive parental figure" at best, regardless of which deity one is so examining.
The whoesale slaughter of the "innocents" makes such a deity appear as a ruthless dictator, one, who, again by human standards, would face world condemnation and public trial if the same could be so imposed.
Another issues arises when one considers the unjust and unfair manner in which such a diety provides for its children/creation. Some are given the gift of faith, and thereby slavation. Others ae not provided with such a gift and are assured eternal damnation. Such seem distributed in a totally abritrary manner by an uncaring and prejudiced deity. Hardly the benign loving god so many try to present.
Any human parent involved in raising more than one offspring will immediately realize that the unequal treatment of one's children is a certain path to disharmony, division and strife.
No "good " parent would practice such, so why would a supreme being who is supposedly all knowing?
Humans want to believe desperately. The ideal of a loving, caring, providing and protective deity as a "father-like" figure appeals to our most basic, and usually most immature insticnts. It is however, just a fantasy, a dillusion and a myth perpetuated by those who have refused to fully accept their humanity along with the rights, responsibilities and consequences of one's adult actions and choices.
As one can not and should attempt to force one's religious beliefs upon others, so one can not and, possibly, should not attempt to force truly reasoning and intelligent behaviors onto others as well.
Each is allowed to make his or her choices. Each will have to live with the effects of the same as they effect the individual and all that exist.
Life goes on. C'est la vie!
May it all be well with you.

Have you been watching tv this morning???
I am amazed that in the same breathe that a televangelists can condemn another "cult" for believing something bizarre, he can go on and on about the "second coming" of a man that died 2000 years ago, or the "perfect precision" of the bible. The depth of the delusion is almost scary!
Christianity is a faith of fear and coercion. I couldn't possible "worship" the god of the bible. As Dawkins say, "one of the worst characters in all of fiction."

Kallan, sweetie, are you ranting here or are you actually serious? You know that in general, Christians are not all that different from most normal people. They have a strange belief system, but that doesn't make them bad. I don't think they hate humanity, I think they are just trying to find a way to love something, that is worse than themselves. If you can love somethingthat has done worse things than you, than maybe you can learn to love yourself. It is only a theory, but I think they need to believe in Gods wrath to stay good people, it is a lot better than them having nothing keeping them in check.

It is called Psychological projection
psychological projection (or projection bias) is a defense mechanism in which one attributes to others one’s own unacceptable or unwanted thoughts or/and emotions. Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted subconscious impulses/desires without letting the ego recognize them. The theory was developed by Sigmund Freud and further refined by his daughter Anna Freud.

It took you FIVE HUNDRED questions to figure out what unites Christians?
I mean it's there in the word CHRIST -ians.
Hey, I heard that christ was a fun guy: tuyrned water into wine, went around with sex-workers, had the 'scum of the earth' invite him to dinner, fed people with loaves and fishes, broke all the laws on the sabbath day... the 'GOD LOVERS' hated him so much they executed him.
The pathetic thing about Christian fundamentalists is that they forget Christ and hold on to the Abuser God you talk about.

the first books of the bible until exodus were written by one man, moses. a person seeking to unite the Jewish community. the easiest way to control is through fear. even if he wasn't a bad person, telling people what the wrath of god will bring to keep them in check was they way he went about it.yes killing and stealing are bad, I'm not saying they aren't, however Christ came to tell how god was all loving and forgiving. Christians get allot of their beliefs(such as their views on gay people) from the word of the old testaments, not Christ . the teachings of Jesus like other prophets(Buddha), not about fearing but loving all things in this world and universe.

Dear Friend,
I say that is very sad. What is even more sad is that God gets blamed for all of the atrocities that we cause to ourselves. We never seem to want to take responsibility for our actions, so we find some one or something to blame.
The we that I am referring to is our egoic selves. We, as egos, are filled with hatred and project that hatred out into the world or on to God, so that we can look innocent. This is how the ego has always survived. The question is when will we wake up to the truth about who we are?
sending love,

People create the problems of the world. God give us a choice, we pick the path we want to follow, some will choose the way of evil and other the righteous way of God. Just because we are Christians we don't get let off lightly. It all boils down to the fact we are all sinners and we fall short of the glory of God we will be standing with every one else on judgment day. God will sort the chaff from the wheat, what a wonderful day that will be, praise the Lord.
