So many great answers here. I posted this question to make others think.
I was thinking about this the other day while looking at my grand-daughter playing in her room. (she's 10mos old) I know that I am different with her than I was with my own children and I began to think about why. What being a parent meant to me as well as what being a grandparent meant. And as I thought about it I realized that not everyone beleived as I do about parenting. I just wanted others to think and share and read.
I open this to voting now, though I have a couple of favorite answers myself, because I cannot choose. I hope you all will help me.

Being a parents means to be there unconditionally for your children, to know your kids, to listen to them, to sacrifice your life for your babies, it means your life is no longer yours is theirs, it means everything after them is second because they hold first place no matter what..being a parent is the hardest job ever... but you do it anyways because your heart is in it.. being a parent is wonderful rewarding and special... I am a proud parent of three, one which is not born from me but it's mine by the grace of god, and I am a proud mother of a Marine he is 18 soon to be a Marine.. it feels my heart with joy..

Being a mom to 4 kids (19, 16, 14 and 6), I have to say being a parent means to have an open mind as well as an open heart. Always be there for your kids through thick and thin. Accept them for who they are and do not change them. Placing them on an open road and hopefully they take the right course, if not be there for them for when they go off road.
Trying to be a friend and a parent as well. Letting them know that it is okay to fall sometimes but get right back up and try again.
Seeing them grown into thier own person and just living life and being happy.

Anyone can be a mother or father But it takes a lot to be a parent.
To me a parent is someone who.
Provides guidance in moral, spiritual and social behaviour.
Provides Medical care, hugs, praise, a clean home with food and clean clothing.
Is there to provide assistance for school and sports if necessary.
Shows up to all social and school events that may occur. Knows when to let go but also when to step back into the picture and discipline any unruly behaviour.
A child is like a flower, if planted in poor soil and left with the weeds,it will grow to be a small sickly plant that may never bloom. The same Plant properly nurtured and watered can become a beautiful showpiece to be proud of.

it means loving your children and guiding them down the right path in life. Too many people take their children for granted and aren't there for them it's a real shame

Teaching them morals, manners and giving them responsibilities so when they are grown they will be well-adjusted adults, who, when they have children, will teach them what they have been taught.
Being a parent to me has been very rewarding. I am proud of who they are and enjoy watching them spread their wings as they enter adulthood :)
