First of all I think everyone knows the dangers of smoking by now. Secondly, as an ex-smoker, I think the last thing a smoker needs as motivation to quit is a lecture from an ignorant, insulting, selfish person. Most smokers I know realize that starting smoking was a stupid thing to do. The problem, which you apparently are too ignorant to understand, is that nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs out there. Very few people can just put down the pack and quit. It is a long process that takes a lot of will power and support from others. If you want people to quit try being supportive instead of obnoxious.

That's not something to be so flippant about. I know 3 people with lung cancer that has spread: my daughter's best friend's mom who is only in her 40's, my aunt who is 70, and my daughter's friend's dad in his 40's. It's very sad and scary.
Everyone knows smoking causes cancer, but decide for whatever reason to risk it. A lot of smokers don't get lung cancer...it's a gamble. I was a smoker for about 10 years of my life, so I know that it's very hard to quit. It's been over a year since I've had one, but it's a struggle sometimes, because I like to smoke. I've spent more years as a non-smoker than a smoker, and hope to never take it up again.
But being insulting about something changes very few minds.

I am a christian and that is one habit I have not yet been able to kick, I wish I never picked them up and yes I know that they might kill me some day if I don't lay them down but I'm not bothered by that as much as what kind of an example it sets for others as I try to bring them to Jesus.
Now on the other hand I don't believe I'll go to hell just for that and just because you don't smoke doesn't mean you don't have many faults of your own so I'll try and quit smoking and maybe you should try to quit looking at the splinters in others eyes without taking out the pole in your own first.

I wish for your sake that the ones that died could answer your question.
And yes that is good advice, perhaps a little harsh but you are correct and further to that. It is a very difficult addiction to kick. I know I have been there. So don't be too hard on these poor souls they are not too different from hard drug users.

Betty from your previous answers. I actually liked your answers. But you know what, forget you. You're not a surgeon general, and not my mother. If I decide to light up in an area I'm allowed to smoke. Just leave me alone. By the way. So stick to your phrase of:
Boop Oop A Doop
(lights up)
***PUFF****

That's funny you should mention this topic. Nolan Miller a famous jewelry and clothing designer was diagnosed with lung cancer and he never took a puff off of a cigarette. I had a friend in college whose mother had a lung cancer and she didn't smoke either. Smoking is bad, true enough, but insulting people is not the answer for them to stop.
My grandmother and 2 of her brothers all died of alzhiemers but not of lung cancer and they were smokers pretty much until death. Hmmmm, makes me wonder why every smoker doesn't die of lung cancer.

It would be hard for anyone to tell you if he or she has died from those diseases if they are dead from it. Hoe can someone who has died tell you....unless they come back as a ghost to let you know?
As for your wording of the question, I'm sure that doesn't endear you to those who smoke tobacco. Being called "filthy" might put some people off.

I want my mom to quit smoking but she won't. I understand the health risks but FYI my grandmother died from small cell carcinoma lung cancer. It happens to smokers and nonsmokers and does not seem to be related to smoking at this point in the research. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. It was terrible to watch her die that way.

Probably about the same amount as those filthy meat eating McDonald's going maggots and those disgusting nylon/rayon wearing people...along with those really nasty people who drink lattes all day. I'm sure you don't do that either.
Just kidding! I do it all and I'm still here. Check back ok?
