There are two significant differences between a cat and a human skeleton.

First, a cat's spine or backbone contains more bones than ours, partly due to the tail. The vertebrae is less tightly connected than ours, making the cat's spine extremely flexible.

Second, the cat lacks a clavicle or collarbone; instead, it has a very much reduced scrap of clavicle tissue buried in the breast muscle. This is because a collarbone would broaden the chest, thus reducing the cat's ability to get through narrow gaps and limiting the length of its stride.

isnt it crazy!? every cat i've had does that...it is truly amazing how even the tiniest little gap, hole or anything they can slip through. our roomates had 3 big dogs, so we would keep our cat in the bedroom, but even as big as he was, he could still slip through the bottom of the door, and it was only an inch wide!!! i understand the spine thing, but how about their heads? thye dont have a bunc hof little bones in their head that are flexible...so how does that work?

You must have at least a three inch opening at the bottom of your door. Mine have less than one inch and no cat can get under any.

Someone cut them short for air flow, or just an excessively short trim

Usually cats have flexibility to go through any holes no matter what, even they are fat.Because it helps them to escape from anything that is dangerous.

Resourceful little muppets aren't they? Even my big 9 year old lump can squash himself fairly flat (about a third normal height ) when he wants to. To big to make it under a door now tho.

Cats are better at squeezing their stomaches in than humans - less fat on most of them

All felines have super-flexible spines. They're just built that way.
