King James Version
3But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
4Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.
5But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven
6For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
7For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
8For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.
9Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
10For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels

Can someone explain this? Im quite shocked myself. I didnt know this book carried so much horror and shame....?

In the days when this letter was written a married woman wore a shawl or head covering signifying that she had a husband. When Christianity was getting started people realized that in God's sight men and women were equal and in the church of Corinth some women took this to mean that they had the liberty to go around without the traditional head covering when they went to church.

Paul is explaining that this thinking is wrong because even though the ground is level at the foot of the cross and no person is better than any other person in the body of Christ, God is a God of order and He has ordained specific roles for men and women. He therefore gives instructions to the believers at the church in Corinth not to dress in a manner that signifies a departure from these roles.

Most Christians consider this rule of dress to be a cultural command and since there is no longer such a practice in our culture women do not have to dress in an archaic fashion since the significance of a head covering has been lost in time. Men are still required to remove their hats when they come to church because in our culture that is considered proper behavior befitting a gentlemen. For the same reason people in the US military remove their hats when they enter a building unless they are bearing arms and it is a part of their uniform.

You must realize the setting!

The setting is during a meeting, the praying is a leading prayer for the congregation. During such the Bible teaches that the man's head must be uncovered while leading the congregation in prayer.

Because of the headship principle, God is Christ head, Christ is man's, and man is woman's -- Paul instructs women who lead the congregation in prayer (when no baptized qualified males are present) to wear some sort of headcovering - a scarf can suffice or in an emergency even a towel from the bathroom.
--------

In regard to the headcovering of men while they pray, I suppose that under extreme circumstances if praying outside at a funeral under Siberian temperatures, God and Christ might permit all to wear a headcovering while praying if otherwise it would cause harm to the person not wearing it for that time.

"Any woman who prays with her head unveiled dishonors her head. It is the same as if her head were shaven, for if a woman will not veil herself then she should cut off her hair. But if it is disgraceful for a woman to be shorn or shaven , let her wear a veil. (1 Corenthians 11 :5).

Whosoever looketh upon a woman to lust after her hath committed ADULTRY with HER already...-----(MATT 5:028)

To be discreet, chaste, keepers at HOME, good, OBEDIENT to their HUSBANDS... ------ (Timothy 2:005)

Likewise, ye wives, be in SUBJECTION to your own HUSBANDS. ----- (1PE 3:001)

Women should remain SILENT in the Church. They are NOT ALLOWED to speak, but must be in SUBMISSION, as the Law says. – (1 Corinthians 14:34)

"I permit NO woman to TEACH or have AUTHORITY over men". –( 1 Timothy 2:11-14)
